IDE/ATA connectors on 2,5" and 3,5" identical?

Hi everyone,

The topic title already revealed my question.
Are the IDE/ATA connectors on 2,5" and 3,5" harddrives identical?
I am wondering this since, i ordered a 100 Gb 7200 rpm 2,5" drive for this iBook and was thinking i might be able to build the 60gb drive i have now in this iBook in my external firewire case... if the connectors are the same (the case now holds a 3,5" drive).
This would make it easier to port over some data.
If not i'll have to burn a few cd's i guess.

A 2.5"-to-3.5" Adapter like this one is what you need. The're not expensive.

Sata and ide connectors are different. I found out the hard way. Does anyone need a 2.5" IDE external case. I have one that is unused.

I'll see if i can find them here or in UK.

Gary, is that external case USB2 or firewire?
I'm thinking about it... would be easy off course to put the harddrive in I have now.
Or maybe i'll go for the adapter and just have it linked up till the transfer is done.

I bought one of those adapters to plug my friends laptop drive into my G4 to see if it was the drive that was having problems or something else in the laptop.  It was the drive but it was a pretty cheap diagnostic aide!

Mine is sort of like that one but a little more beefy where the power connector wires fasten into it!  You don't want things to work loose on a hard drive that is operating!

Actually, I would just use it to pump over some data and then forget about it (put the 3,5" in again after).
So for just one use... it doesn't really matter cause i wouldn't screw the drive into it but just have it on the table probably.

Thanks Gmann, I shouldn't buy it though, as it would give me a slow external one, i'll go for the adapter when needed

I'll probably get one once i'm over in London.
I printed out the manual on how to replace the harddrive on this iBook and it looks more work than expected.
So might wait to install the drive till my sweety is actually with me (with her computer) and probably till Leopard is out, then i have a good reason to start all over again (installing it).

for the same price, on the same store i found the adapter WITH a small metal bracket to mount a 2,5" on a 3,5" harddrive bay.

I printed out the manual from iFixit.com on how to replace the harddrive on this iBook, i also used it to replace the ram module and find them pretty good.
The second link was from a site that is pretty messy if you ask me but the third link is interesting, showing parts to buy.
I'll bookmark that one.
