If you are still having trouble with Automator launching when try to expand a file you can try resetting Launch Services.

You can get info. on how to reset LS here.

Don't depend on the OS to use the correct app for that file - there is obviously something screwy with it.  

Drag and Drop the file onto Stuffit and let it do its thing.

And if the resulting file has a .sea suffix, it's NOT an installer yet!
