AppleWorks spread sheet acting weird
« on: October 12, 2006, 01:30:46 PM »
I haven't used AW much. I have a simple expense list on a spread sheet.
About 25 items with the $ amounts. And a few sub totals. And a Grand Total at the bottom of the column.

Today I wanted to remove a sub total amount in one cell. Each time I clicked on that cell, it froze up. I had to Force Quit. Over and over.
The Force Quite pane says "AW not responding".

When I did a new Auto Sum, it added the first 5 numbers but the total was incorrect! Almost like it was adding in the sub total amount on top of the first 5 numbers.

Then I deleted the whole Sub Total row.
And put in a new sub total row.
Then I tried to Auto Sum and Calculate for those first 5 cells. Now all I get is 0 for a sub total.
When I add a 6th item and amount, the sub total or Grand Total does not change.

How to fix this?

Try this:

open the offending spreadsheet

select all, and copy

open a brand-new, empty spreadsheet document

click in the very first cell [top left]

paste

I have used this method to 'cure' many 'misbehaving' files over the years

It's not always a problem of "garbage in, garbage out". If the data is good, it could be that the file is in the dumps. Do you have other files that behave? If kbear's method doesn't work, try it with a copy of a known good file.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.
