We're getting more Macs at work....
« on: October 16, 2006, 04:51:29 PM »
We've had a new picture library system installed; actually it's an established library system from a sister paper that is being extended so we can access it. It runs on Macs. But being an older library it only runs on OS9  (we're told!), so all these little classic G3 iMacs are appearing in the office for communal use, apparently brought in from all over the group.

And they are all green. Someone obviously did a bulk buy when they were new. I seem to recall that was the least popular colour, so I guess they got them cheap at the time. Strangely the ones nobody wants to use are the ones that have the original puck mouse. eek2.gif

What with those and PCs running Quark 3.3 on Windows 95 and 98 I sometimes feel like someone who's found the secret of time travel... sad.gif

Gad...and I thought the Eagle Tribune (our local daily, where I occasionally do pagination) was in the dark ages! At least 99% of the Macs they're using are G4's - though the only people who get to use OS X are a couple of the designers. The pagination system is all OS 9 - they've been claiming they're moving it all to OS X for years now. Quark 3.3 is still in use there too.

However, the picture library they use is browser-based Cascade System's Mediasphere; which appears to have now gone toes up, in that the domain is now for sale and I can't find ANY current references to Mediasphere. Anyway - Mediasphere is web-based, and you can access the wire services libraries through it as well, though I assume that part is  subscription-based. (There is an earlier, non-browser-based version that a few people seem to still prefer for reasons I've never been able to fathom)

Smaller newspapers seem to be exceedingly slow to adopt new software and hardware. The ET will be forced to do something pretty soon - their hardware is aging. Someone told me that the Boston Globe is using InDesign - and certainly many magazines are using it now. smile.gif

Given that the new iMacs are practically a "laptop" on a stand, are they any more reliable than a MacBook? Used to be the conventional wisdom to buy the protection plan for a "portable" but not a "desktop" ... but these iMacs seem to fall somewhere in between.

Congrats on the new Macs at work. Maybe you can invent some problems to solve with them and make yourself indispensable. wink.gif
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

The ex-president of our MUG is still in the OS 9 market. Sells sveral machines each day and supports hundreds of clients who are running stuff on even older OSs and many pre-iMac hardware. Many companies just don't see a need to spend money on buying new hardware that won't run the software they already have. Many times there is no newer software anyway. They will eventually need support that does not exist and they will then pay for their foot-dragging, one way or another...

Showing what an observant journalist I am.... blush-anim-cl.gif I'll have to have a look when I get into the office this morning doh.gif so it'll be a few hours before I reply on that one.

All this "new" equipment is pending a great new system we were being promised when I joined the company back in  2000. I said at the time it wouldn't be there by the time I got to retirement age. Nice to be right occasionally wink.gif

What's the definition of progress again? biggrin.gif

Update - took a look at said iMacs today and in fact they are blueberry. Well it looks green under our lights. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it biggrin.gif

Haven't checked all of them but there's at least one tray-loader amongst them.

The candy colored iMacs were sold in a few different versions.
Rev. C was 266 Mhz, Rev. D was 333 and the DV line was 400.

Overall there was Bondi Blue, Indigo, Blueberry, Strawberry, Tangerine, Lime, Ruby, Snow, Graphite, Sage, and the unbelievable Dalmatian and Flower Power. rolleyes.gif

My sister's kids have an iMacDV 400 in LIME. smile.gif  (With matching Epson 740i printer)
It is a slot loader and still running everyday after almost 7 years of pounding by 3 kids and one adult.  thumbup.gif

Tangerine was the least popular color, BTW. wink.gif

just before the DV model
Slot loading
and lacked firewire

Have one here at home
