I have had some problems recently - safari no longer connects to the internet, nor does Opera. A thought occurs do I really need safari? If I delete safari will I have any difficulty loading Firefox?

Another problem is that software update won't run either.....A message comes up that I cannot connect to the internet -1001 - I am connected to the internet via airport and radio - so what's wrong?

If all those programs are reporting that you are not connected, I wouldn't suspect a software porblem, but rather a network problem. Log into the airport base station or router (not sure which you have), and make sure it says you are really connected to the internet.

Another quick thing to try is shutting off (or unplugging) your routerbase station and modem. LEaving them powered off for a minute or two, then turn on the modem and router/base station. This procedure sometimes gets you reconnected if you are using a cable base ISP.

Sounds like the Mac ( or Airport ) don't know or see the internet, anymore. Not sure what you mean by "radio", Airport is radio. I'd suggest trying a direct connection to the internet, first. What type of connection is that, anyway? Cable, DSL, satellite?

I don't have an Airport box, but I seem to remember that it has a "Reset" function. You might try that, also.

If you dump Safari, you may also lose the ability to designate any browser as the default for the System to use. That's right, Safari has the interface to set that user choice. Same for your email choice, that's set by Mail. Rather than delete them, just make a zip archive ( available in the Finder: File->Create Archive of [selected file] ) and store them someplace secure ( same drive, external drive, CD, etc. ). That way, should you ever need their abilities again, you will have them.

Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Check >menu>apple icon > system preferences > network >
It should say in the first box the configuration location of the airport.
The second box should give you “network status”
The larger box should show AIRPORT IN GREEN

If not, go to the first box on top and find a good location, or create a new one.

If you use the network icon in the menuBar, (looks like streaks on your windshield) click on it and either turn airport on or point it to a running router.
