Beacher, you hit the nail on the head about the continuing updates lately of iTunes...
I almost always use Software Update. The only problem I had was with, guess what, the iTunes updater (see Macheadcase's blog on that...) or wait a minute, was it the iPod updater
In any case it usually works well for me, running in 10.3.9
