Halloween Memories

Do you have any Halloween memories from when you were younger?

When I was about 10, about a dozen other boys & I went to a midnight movie after Trick or Treating (Halloween was on Friday). After the movie was over about 2AM, we had to walk home because the streetcars had quit running.

Along the way home, we saw a house with the porch light on & the front door open. We knocked and a man came to the door. We said "Trick or Treat". He told us to wait a minute. In a few moments, he came back with a paper sack. He opened the screen door and reached into the sack. Out came a hand gun, which he pointed at us. We all ran, but my feet wouldn't run as fast as my brain told them to run. We heard the man laughing. The "Trick" was on us.
Cheers, Tom

Best memory I had from when I was a kid was the time we went to the wealthy area of town and were invited in for treats and bobbing for apples.  When we got home we noticed a man in the shadows between our house and the neighbors and told my dad about it; it turned out to be a neighbor who was a judge and he was "very" drunk and just trying to scare kids!

I wasn't much younger.... but:
There's a local pumpkin carving wizard who gets a whole park to display his talent. We took the kids almost every year for awhile there. One time there was a display of all 50 states carved into 50 pumpkins. My 10 year old was wowing the folks beside us by correctly naming the state capitol of any state I asked him about.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

A LOT YOUNGER DAYS.... eek2.gif

A fellow who raised hamsters commercially.... gave them out one Halloween to youngsters from other neighborhoods... not his own where the parents would return or retaliate doh.gif

I was one of the 'lucky ones....   and Grandpa made a wooden framed, chicken wire mesh cage for our new pet..... MUCH to the dissatisfaction of my parents...  About a week later he dissappeared from the cage through a hole he'd chewed in the wooden frame.... we 'figured out' where he went when the brick patio behind our house developed 'waves' in it and the drainage tile around the house 'plugged' up with sand and had to be dug up and re-done....  the hamster had 'escaped' from the basement up the drain pipe that came through the wall and then dug his way out of the tile and burrowed around under the patio..... needless to say we were NOT allowed to 'Trick or Treat' in that neighborhood again and NEVER had any pet smaller than a drain pipe again... Probably my most memorable was in 1960 just before the national election (Nixon/Kennedy).

As a young teenager I was discouraged from dressing up since back then Halloween was only for 'little kids'.

But my Mom broke that rule.

She put on a devil's costume, painted her face and walked the main streets of downtown with a sign that said "Vote for (politician) and go to Hell with me!"
