Have you got AdAware installed? It may help with some, but here are a few others to help ward off the Windows nasties:

And a whole bunch of stuff here:

The name on the browser has nothing to do with it. DoubleClick and others of its ilk don't check to see if it's Firefox. But thanks to Firefox's extensions, or add-ons, cookies are very easy to control without having to go into the preferences.

I use an extension called Prefbar — click on the thumbnail in this post and check the top of the picture. Prefbar might need tweaking to work because it wasn't updated (maybe it has been, by now), but you can turn cookies on and off with PrefButtons, as well. PrefBar and PrefButtons have other controls, as well, that I haven't bothered with because of other extensions or simply don't apply. And there are other Firefox add-ons that easily control cookies.

Adblock is a godsend, along with automatic updaters that block all DoubleClick's ads, along with the other international cookie-tracing outfits like it, and any other ad you don't want to see.

Since Firefox is cross-platform, these extensions work on PCs, as well.

Welcome to the exciting world of modern-day peasea use!

Use your Mac online as much as you can and avoid even connecting the peasea to the net as much as possible.

You do not have these things on your computer because you started sing Firefox. You only know about these things because of Firefox. You were infected before--you just didn't know about it, because other browsers don't tell you about it.

To get rid of adware and spyware, I like the free program Ad-Aware; I've found it is easier for non-technical users to use than Spybot Search & Destroy (Spybot S&D assumes that you know how the system Registry works, for example).

You can download Ad-Aware here.

It has been noted elsewhere that AdAware doesn't always catch everything, and in fact some users were complaining that it "wasn't as good as it used to be"; that's why I included links to the other software as well.

Dirty rotten, no good advertisers. Oh! Wait a minute! My son studied advertising... but his degree is in Journalism, and he's working at a newspaper, not an ad agency. whew.gif

Telemarketers and advertisers are certainly sinking to the depths of used car salesmen and sharks.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

By defending in depth.

I.e., use multiple tactics.

Firefox > Edit > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies > Keep Cookies > "Ask Me Every Time"

Using this Firefox option you will see just how many cookies the world is trying to put on your computer - and you can stop it from happening in real time.

Of course, that can get a little tiresome.  So it may be best to automate the process - this is a computer, isn't it? - fight fire with fire - with:

(1) Adblock Plus

OR

(2) Adblock

You might also consider adding Adblock Filterset.G Updater or a similar pre-configured ad-blocker filter list to one of the ad-blockers, above.

Happy browsing -
