And yet another glitch

I don't use Safari much, preferring Firefox, but one app in particular which I use a lot
— Reunion8, which I use on a genealogical project — insists on Safari.  I have a lot of genealogical websites bookmarked on Firefox, so I'd like to see them in Safari too.

But Safari won't import from Firefox.  The Safari 'Help' gives detailed instructionson what to do:

The default Netscape or Mozilla bookmarks file is:

The default Internet Explorer bookmarks file is:

~/Library/Preferences/Explorer/Favorites.html

To force Safari to import your bookmarks, simulate using Safari for the first time. Following these steps causes Safari to reimport bookmarks for both Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Netscape Navigator. If you have already successfully imported bookmarks from one browser but not the other, you only need to use the step below (4 or 6) that corresponds to the browser from which bookmarks have not yet been imported.

Follow these steps:

Quit Safari if it is open.
Drag the target bookmark files back to their original location.
Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/).
Type: defaults delete com.apple.Safari NetscapeAndMozillaFavoritesWereImported
Press Return.
Type: defaults delete com.apple.Safari IEFavoritesWereImported
Press Return.
Quit Terminal.
Open Safari.

Imported bookmarks go into a collection named "Imported Netscape/MozillaFavorites" or "Imported IE Favorites". If such a collection already exists, they are merged into the contents of the existing collection.

Well, I've done all that, but still no Firefox bookmarks and they don't appear in the   'Imported' collection.   Any ideas??

Strange. I just opened Safari, clicked on 'Menu bar/File/Import Bookmarks'. In the browse window which opened, I migrated to '~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/fchrxf9w.default/bookmarks.html', clicked on the Import button and the Imported Bookmarks showed in Safari Bookmarks instantly.

Still messin' with importing/exporting bookmarks?! Stranger still! I guess some like to do things the hard way. Hint: <URLM Pro>, but there are others...

Haven't used any 'import/export' hack/trick/menu/method in years! That's what computers are for.

As for making Reunion open something other than Safari...

First, use Safari to set FF ( or any other browser ) to your Default browser ( only known use for Safari ).

Second, open Reunion ( version 8, anyway ) and use the prefs ( actually in the "Options" menu in version 8 ) and select the "Web..." option. In the window that appears, there is a list of items to edit/change/colour/etc. Select the 'Browser' item ( was the top item in the list I looked at ) and there's a little pop-up button offering Safari as the default but another labeled "Other...". Even if you don't have a browser by that name, select it and I think you'll get a Navigation window allowing you to find and select the browser of your choice.

Jim:  Thanks.  I know you're on commission for URLM Pro and I have it (thanks to you) but can't get on with it.  I like FF's Bookmark Manager andcope quite well with that.

As for making FF my default browser that's the first thing I did when I opened Safari for the first time.

Now for an oddity.  Intending to follow your advice re Reunion8, I opened it, but the only items in the menubar were 'File' and 'Help'.  I thought that odd because I distinctly recall going to 'Options' for Prefs when I first loaded it.

So I decided to reinstall from the CD, the which I did, but still the only items showing in the menubar are File & Help.

What now?


ClayEM:  I endeavoured to follow your experience.   Firefox doesn't appear in the
Application Support of the Library on my Main Drive, but it does in the Home folder.

So off I went following your track to Profiles, and although there are three items there, none of them are 'fchrxf9w.default'.

Very confused.  Guess I've messed thiungs up somewhere along the line.

So there is no "Reunion 8" in the menu bar? No "Window"? That is weird. The Reunion preferences should be under the "Reunion 8" menu item.

Try deleting any .plist files you can find for Reunion. They'll be in your Library->Preferences folder. See if that helps. If not, look for any other preference files (if there are any) and if that doesn't help, every last bit of Reunion that you can find. Then reinstall.

Be sure your are actually running the Reunion program and not one of its 'supplemental' apps. I think there is one for printing/creating Pedigree lists and such. There may be more, but the key is that they don't have much, if any, menu. If you can find your latest Reunion data file, try double-clicking it. That should definitley start the actual program.

I remember your concerns about using URLMP from awhile back. Frankly, I can't remember much about setting it up, it was so long ago. It just works, for me, anyway. It's also getting a little long in the tooth! Not that I need it to do anything else, but just how much can/do you want a bookmark manager to do? It just sits there in my menu bar waiting to be asked to save a bookmark. One still must decide what folder/division to put it in or maybe create a new folder/division. And they all end up being placed in the order you insert them, although you can sort each folder by Name, URL, Date or Label. I usually do that stuff by hand, making ( multiple ) dividers the way and where I want.

But, right now, lets see about getting Reunion working...
