Making DVD's in I-DVD with a separate audio track
« on: January 07, 2007, 11:25:46 AM »
I may need to make an audition DVD for my daughter's college auditions, and I've never worked in iDVD before. I have pretty good recording equipment, and I'd like to record the audio portion on my Roland 2480CD Digital Workstation, and then export a finished audio track to my computer to link up with the video recording, which would be made on a Digital handycam of some sort. I can export .wav or .aiff files from the Roland.

Anyone with any experience here? I have the capability on the Roland to use SMTPE time encoding with the audio, supposedly... I can figure that out easily, but has anyone got any experience they might share with me on something like this? I don't know if SMTPE time encoding is something that your garden-variety Digital handycam might have...

I've got iDVD in 10.3.9 on the MDD, and iDVD in 10.4.8 on the iBook, and can burn DVD's on either machine. It's going to be a fairly simple DVD, so I'm hoping I wouldn't have to have something like Final Cut Pro, way too expensive...

TIA,

My partner records all our music, fiddles about with it and then hands me a cd - with AIFF files.

I then DO NOT IMPORT THEM TO ITUNES (as it can compress them) but drag them onto my desktop.

Then I open iMovie and import them into the DVD.  You can add more than one track too.

Then I open iDVD and if I want to add music to the first-on title page, I drag and drop.

Are you going to use iMovie to make the original audition film? pm me if you want help.

More than likely, yes,  I would use iMovie, as it's the only video editing program I own.

At least this tells me it's possible to do, thank you very much Frances! I will take you up on your offer and pm you when we get to that point.

Thanks a bunch! clap.gif How are you coming along with your network? I wish I could be more helpful to you there...

Best,

Oh god, like I am suddenly the expert.

Having read my paltry posts on how to bugger up your entire computer network, I think i should crawl back under my rock!!!! (in a whisper... but I have done this iMovie/audio thing quite well and made money from it, so I might be able to help).

I can hear the laughter echoing around the world, now....... more gin please....

Thanks

Don't be fooled, like I was and expect any video/audio editing capabilities from iDVD. It's simply a bare bones GUI used to create titles, backgrounds and menus for previously created video with audio in them.

However you create the video and audio, they should first be combined/edited in iMovie. You can also add 'markers' ( with text titles ) that can/will then be used by iDVD to create 'chapter' divisions and scene titles. The menu 'things' in iDVD, should you choose to use them are simply the bits of video you created in iMovie.

These programs are less than intuitive for those of us who have never worked in video, from my experience. Terms such as 'chapters', 'scenes', 'markers' may mean different things to the un-trained than what they mean in these two programs. If you have dotMac, I recommend viewing the tutorials there on both programs and visiting some of the forums that discuss these apps. Then, play around with them for a while, creating small movies/DVDs and generally learn what happens with what! It ain't rocket science, but it is different! At least it was for me. blush-anim-cl.gif
