I have a friend who's switching to the Mac from a PC.  She's purchasing a laptop and is still on dial-up.  As I looked at the ports, I don't see one for a phone cord.  So... what does one do?  She's coming over tomorrow to order it on line.

Any suggestions?  Doesn't look like DSL will work either--EEK!!!   oops.gif

No, there are no modems in recent Macs.

Apple sells a $50 USB modem for this purpose.

Why wouldn't DSL work?  It connects to the Mac via ethernet.

Check the ports again: next to the power cord attachment is the ethernet port and next to that is the modem port to which an external modem attaches. No internal modem in any new MacBook.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Thanks, Kbeartx and Rongold!!  At least it's possible!

I've got cable and thought, albeit incorrectly, that because DSL used the phone line, it need the phone jack--RJ-11.

Now, if I can get her to switch to either DSL, cable or wireless...?  We'll see.

Gregg--I don't think we're there yet.  Technology changes but some of us remember what 'used to be'!   cheer.gif  toothgrin.gif

Not the young'uns. That's the point of the commercial. (idea stolen from the R A D I O line in a current commercial)
