G5 memory enhancment...
« on: January 19, 2007, 09:03:13 AM »
Anybody replaced the memory sticks in a 1st gen. G5 20" - 1.8mhz??? (no built in iSight).
Don't think it should be very hard... I've seen the inside and it doesn't look very scary. doh.gif  eek2.gif

And any suggestions beside eBay as to how to 'dispose' of 2-512 sticks that came with it originally??

TIA...

Piece of cake, Bob. smile.gif Directions are in the booklet that came with the G5 or online at Apple if you need any guidance. http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Memory.pdf

Local school system?
Put the specs up here and ask if anyone wants them?

New, the lowest price I could find was $37 per module - and they seem to sell just fine on eBay for anywhere from $29 to $39. Sure you don't want to go the eBay route? wink.gif

Don't mind eBay, Paddy, just was, maybe, looking for other outlets...

Thanks for the reply.

And I missed the "20" " part...my bad.

This one?  http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG5_20inch_memory.pdf

(I must admit I was wondering just how much RAM you were stuffing in what I thought was a G5 PowerMac like our SP 1.8GHz, with 4 RAM slots!)

Craigslist is another option - there's one for Minneapolis: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/

Here's my number 1 tip for people new to installing RAM: Don't be afraid to use force. The first time people do this, they never use enough force to get the RAM to seat correctly. You must keep pushing until the stick snaps into place (literally!). Don't be worried if it feels like the motherboard it bending, it won't get hurt from the install at all.

Good luck!

Thanks for the greeting. I have been lurking around, but have not really been posting at any boards lately. Seems I go through phases of heavy posting and slow posting activity.

Of course, my description refers to the time when I was able to help all the NoWonder refugees get a temp home until TS was created. That was certainly a turbulent but fun time smile.gif

Thanks Mike! That's a piece of the story I was unfamilar with.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

System profiler says all is 'good to go'....

Ordered Friday afternoon and delivered a 3:08 PM today.... 'standard' delivery...FAST!!

Well, we'll give it a work out and keep the 2-512s around for a few days to be sure everyone works nice together.

Thanks, Paddy for the instruction link.... no problems and way easy to do eusa_dance.gif .
