How to upload Terragen files to webhost
« on: January 22, 2007, 07:43:03 AM »
Im taking a class in Terragen, and I was wondering if I could upload a Terragen picture(they are not image files) onto my webhost.  They are .tgd files. All I seem to be able to upload to it, are .jpg .gif  and a few other image files and .html.

When we upload our .tgd files they are turned into text files with an additional .txt.

Picture one is what it turns into, all text.
Picture two is what the icon looks like, a big ?.

I have no clue of how to do this, hopefully it can be done, but I kind of doubt it.
Thanks,
Jane

How to upload Terragen files to webhost

You can upload a Terragen file just fine. In order for you to understand what is happening, it is very important for you to understand that a Terragen file IS NOT AN IMAGE. A Terragen file is text. All Terragen files are text. What you see in your browser is the true contents of the file.

Terragen is a landscape program that lets you make pictures of scenery. When you save a .tgd file, you are not saving a picture of scenery. You are saving a series of commands to Terragen.

Think of it this way. Suppose I told you: "Take out a red pencil. Draw a circle one inch in diameter that is half an inch from the left and two inches from the top of the page. Take out a blue pencil. Fill the circle in blue."

What I just said is not a picture. It is text; my words are not a picture of a red circle filled in blue.

That is what a Terragen file is. It is a text file that contains a list of commands to the computer program Terragen. Terragen follows those commands, and draws a picture. But the TGA file is not a picture; it is a list of commands to follow in order to make a picture.

What do you want to do? Do you want to put up a picture you created in Terragen so that other people can look at it? If so, you need to "render" the picture--that is, you need to tell Terragen, "Open this list of commands, follow the commands, and then save the picture you made by following the commands." When you render a file, it will make a picture, which you can open in Photoshop or some other graphics program and save as a JPEG for placing on the Web.

Hi Tacit, To the rescue again!
I am able to put my renders on my site as image files, just couldnt put up a .tgd file and now, thanks to you, I now understand why.
What I usually do is spiff my renders up in Photoshop, then make a smaller .jpg and put it on my picture/classwork site.
So now that you have explained what a Terragen file is, now I understand that I cannot put it in that form into the webhost.
This new version, TG2 is just amazing, we are having incredible fun with it, and I am learning fast.
Thank you again,
Jane

But, of course you can. It will simply need to be used by someone with Terragen. If the .tgd file is smaller than the jpg you've been using, you can save some space ( and up/download time ) by using the Terragen file. And, since this is supposedly a Terragen forum, everyone should already know how to open/view a .tgd. dntknw.gif At least, the image would be at full resolution instead of whatever your jpg gets reduced to. smile.gif

You could always "zip" it and upload it that way. Then "they" would download, unzip and open.
