Apple 20" Cinema Display Artifact
« on: January 30, 2007, 12:18:45 PM »
Hi,

Woe is me!

Was watching a movie. Suddenly there appeared a vertical dark gray stripe (translucent), about 3/4 inch wide, extending from top to bottom of the screen and about one third in from the left.

I activated shutdown, then restarted. The stripe is still there.

I vehemently aver that it has nothing to do with my impaired eyesight.

Is this a case of "All Hope abandon Ye Who enter here"? Or can someone offer a (cheap) solution?

Eric,

You might try Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

By doing so, the video settings such as refresh rate, screen resolution, number of colors are reset (at least in OS X).

Also, a Safe Boot may help. Restart while holding the Shift key. The startup will be a bit longer than normal as the machine does a bit of housekeeping. After the machine is fully booted, restart as normal.

Eric-I had something similar happen, with the good news being, it was the video card gone bad.  No, there wasn't any warning.  No fuzzies, no nothng before it happened.

My post in the archives describes the bands and almost neon colors.

Sound like it?
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

pendragon,

Tried your suggestions. Unfortunately they failed to effect a cure.

jepinto,

Luckily my Quad is still within its first year so recourse to the reseller may be a good idea. Re-seating the video card looks to be worth a try too.

Thanks to both
