Who is our resident expert on Skype? I have a couple of problems I'd like to deal with. One concerning the audio and another concerning on and offline status. I get little if any help from the Skype people, they appear to be interested only in Windows problems, even when I tell them I'm running a Mac, if they do answer it sounds like I'm talking to a Windows person who knows little about Macs. OK, first what are the questions, as a lot of us here use Skype.
I love it and have very little trouble any more.
And there is a great Skype Mac forum somewhere, I havent used it for a long while, but I could try to find it again if needed.

I started using it way back when the Echo was the big problem, but that is ages ago.
Then the iMic solved other problems, so just ask and there are plenty of us here to help.

If you are still having problems with Skype, dont hesitate to ask, as its great once youve got it set up and running well.  There are a couple
of little tricky things, but once they are set correctly, its wonderful.

First, I should tell you what my setup is. I have a USB Telbox B2K from Yealink that switches a standard phone from POT Line to USB. Skype is 2.5.0.85 and SkyMACMate is 1.0.0.11.

My number one problem started after I installed 10.4.8. With 10.3.9, the Telbox didn't switch until commanded. Now it switches as soon as SkyMACMate is opened. I asked tech support at Skype and was told that the .ini file in SkyMACMate should have a line in it that said "szBoxTurnCommand = *" and if it said anything else, to change it. Well, after finding the .ini file I found no such line, so I added it. Didn't change a darn thing. Keep in mind that it used to work correctly. Any help here will be appreciated as I would like to have those programs active all the time. Thanks.

Did you stop/restart Skype after changing the initialization file? You may even need to log out/in.

Wow,  I have never heard of Telbox, Yealink, POTline, nor SkyMacMate.
I just have Skype installed as a single app on my Mac, and it works great.
What are all these extras?  You dont need to have all that stuff running.  

I would uninstall all that extra stuff, reinstall Skype and go from there.

I suppose SkyMacMate is a method of using Skype with a land line. "POT" is Plain Old Telephone service. Haven't ever tried that, just use Skype through VoIP, only time a phone is involved is when I call a land line ( which I don't since that now costs money ).

Seems what they are telling you is to include that command in the initialization file ( .ini ) and starts things up again so that file will get read by whatever uses it.

Jane, since my Mac is a Cube, It has no Audio input or output jacks, consequently, no place to connect a mic or headphones. A Telbox is basically a switch that connects a standard telephone between the plain old telephone line (POT) or the computer's USB input depending upon the switch position. This is changed by a command from the phone, usually the * key. Yealink is a company that makes the switch and SkyMACMate is the software that lets it work with Skype and SkypeOut. I have a cordless phone plugged into the box which allows me to use Skype anywhere in the house as long as the computer is on and the programs loaded.

ABD, yes I did restart, log out and in etc. after adding the command.

Most of the people I call either don't have computers or are not computer literate. My wife is not a real computer enthusiast either. Yes, there are still those people out there, so I use SkypeOut basically making the whole computer system transparent and letting me call people who don't have Skype. I know that there is a charge, but compared to POTS or cellphone service, it's cheap. I signed up a couple of months ago when it was still $15 a year. I understand it has gone up.

I'd suggest talking with the SkyMACMate developers and maybe the Telbox people, then. If I understand correctly neither of these devices are supported/made by Skype, even if they may have sold them. Kinda puts you between some crystallized metallic chemicals and a non-soft location, IMHO.

Hi Steve,  I too, use SkypeOut most of the time, it sure is cheap and easy.
But the way I have it set up, makes me tethered to my Mac. I have a seperate headset into the Mac, thru an iMic which is a USB hub that you can use all sorts of music connections with.
We do have our old regular landline cordless, and one old wired one in the bedroom upstairs, in case the power goes out, we still have phone.  And the cell phone, which I will upgrade when the iPhone comes out this summer.
I can see why people get Cubes, you can unplug them and take them with you like you could a laptop.  But I stay home pretty much, so the large screen LCD iMacs were good for us here.
