I don't know why, but I thought of Ishmael when I saw him. Remeber, the narrator of Moby Dick?

Years ago, I had a friend with a dog who looked exactly like that (white front feet, speckly face). Her name was Gonzo because of her reaction to people she knew. She'd go crazy with joy.

The dog's face looks like a Buddy.

Spot, of course.

Male or female?

"Good Dog"?

Once had two poodles; Boy and Girl. Those were the names, as well as the genders.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Years ago I found an abandoned yellow lab walking at the beach in the middle of winter(no collar, and had just been spayed), she followed us home, and after calling all the dog officers and vets within 50 miles around, we found that she was not from our area.  They think someone had brought her over the CCCanal bridge and dropped her off at a restaurant, as she had been seen in the parking lot. She must have followed one of the cooks home, as he lives near us, and he could have been feeding her.
We kept her for a couple of days, but our dog didn't get along with her.  So one of our neighbours had just had become dog-less, and we gave her to them, they were so happy to get her!  They still have her, she is probably about 15 years old.

They named her "D" "O" "G", pronounced DeeOhGee. I thought that was kind of cute.

QUOTE
kayaking with a dog is impossible

I don't know about kayaking (unless you have a kayak built for two...) but our dear departed dog would canoe with us. Sophie was a Rottweiler-mix that we lived with for 13 years.  She had her own life vest... folks would laugh when they saw the three of us in the canoe (especially the sheriff's lake patrols.)

The vest came in handy one day...  Sophie didn't like water and she wasn't a good swimmer.  When we were loading the boat she fell off the dock and sunk like a rock before the vest brought her back to the surface.  I reached down and grabbed the handle on the top of the vest and hauled her out one-handed (pretty good considering the size of the dog!)

'Course, Good Ol' Sophie would do anything for us.  Absolutely spoiled us rotten... she was easy to train, she didn't have even one bad doggie habit, loved everyone/everything and in all those years she never caused us to regret having her even once. She would travel with us or stay at the kennel for our European travels; it was all good to her because she was so even-tempered...  It's been over two years since she died and we have yet to meet a comparable replacement.

Seeing as how she picked us (wandered into our yard not once but twice...) that may be the best way to find a doggie buddy...

Hi Mayo,
This is sort of how we got Muffin, a friend of ours who owns a grooming business found her abandoned, and brought her into the local pound, This is the link,
http://www.friendsoffalmouthdogs.org/
hit Alumni and go to #2, Muffin.
She had 14 years of fun with us, I took her to work every single day, and after we retired, she ran the show, loved the canoe, hated the motorboat. That will be the attachment.  I also have pictures of her with her life jacket on, but they are on old photo upload sites, and I have so many of the doggone picture album sites, and Muffin has so many albums, that it would take me forever to search the URLs to find them.
And to quote you,
""It's been over two years since she died and we have yet to meet a comparable replacement.""
is one of the reasons we have not gotten another dog, she was amazing and people have told us this.  Never had to be leashed or scolded(well once when she attacked a sick raccoon in our yard and I was the one who got the worst of it.)
We would think that we might be comparing dogs, and be dissapointed.
But when we get old and cannot travel any more by plane, we will have MANY dogs.

Gipsy springs to mind... wandering the streets. Has that air of detachment from the "civilised(!)" world. Caroline also suggested Socks.

Our test when we had dogs was how it sounded when you were calling them. One neighbour called their cat Mummy.... and no, we never found out why smile.gif

Frances, if you can't decide on a suitable name for him (her?), just call him (her?) DEEFER.       Why?   D for Dog!  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

......Don't know - haven't met him yet.

Just arranging transport from Hereford to ABerdeen and then I will come down on the ferry (14 hour night trip) and pick him up.

I quite like "Mummy's Special Soldier" or MESS for short!
