How to split one long recording into "tracks"?
« on: April 09, 2007, 03:24:37 AM »
Good morning - hope everyone had a good Easter.

I want to put some of the radio programmes I've recorded with EyeTV on to CD so I can listen to them in the car. Of course it shows as one 60-minute track and the car stereo doesn't have a fast forward button, only skip to get to the next track... Anyone still with me? smile.gif

Is there a way to simply split the recording with markers so that the player 'sees', say six tracks of 10 minutes each, without having to do lots of serious editing. I'm not looking for finesse - it doesn't matter where the marker lands, it's just a way of skipping part way through a disc and not having to start listening from the beginning every time!

Software available - QT Pro, MPEG Streamclip and, of course, EyeTV.

Thanks in advance.

I have to do this alot!!!

I use Sound Studio.  Open the track with it.  Put the markers at the beginning and the end (Apple + M).  Double click on the bit you want so it highlights, Press copy.  Open a new file and then paste.  Save immediately giving it the name you want and do any tidying up afterwards.  Do this for every track and there you go!

Good luck.  If you are desparate - I will write you a better more detailed version.  Or, if you are desparate, send me the thing and I will do it for you!

Not sure what version of <Sound Studio> you're using frances, but there's no need to select, copy, paste. All you do is insert the markers you want, name them as desired, and use the "Split by Markers" menu item. It will create a list of separate files with the names you used for the markers. I always check the "Add numbers to name" function so that will stay sorted as they are in the original file ( the OS always wants to alphabetize those lists, ya know ). And, if you have the newest version ( 3.5 ) you can add all the meta info that iTunes normally uses. Best of all, those added numbers won't show when you add the files to iTunes, they'll simply be used to put them in the numerical order you want ( no more editing the number out of the file name clap.gif ).

It's not free, but it's extremely stable, well supported and very easy to use ( numerous filters to clean up those recordings ). Saves in about a dozen formats, 20 quality settings for mp3's. Best audio app I have. Well worth the cost, IMHO.

I use Audacity and it does pretty much the same thing as Sound Studio (which I've also tried) as far as markers and splitting into separate tracks.
