How can I use a network drive for my movies?
I tried to do that but the camera refuses to import to the ext. When I use the internal there's no problem. Of course I can put the there but I want to work on the ext. so that I don't have to move the movies around.

Are you getting a certain error message when you have the saved iMovie file on the external and you try to import it? I've imported to an external drive this in the past with no problem as well.

I can remember someone trying to do this in one of our video labs and they kept coming up with errors; I suspect there is just too much latency in our WAN to support this. You can stream with Quicktime Pro so I suspect it's not outside the realm of possibility if you have enough speed.

No, there's no message the importing just works with hickops and then stops

I don't think that method is fast enough.

Movies like many MBs a second.

Go with Firewire.

All my movies are stored and worked from on my external hard drive. This is attached with a Firewire connection.

This seems to work fairly seamlessly for me.

Simple answer: You can't. If you do, you will see stuttering and dropped frames.

A drive that you use to import movies must be very fast, because it must be capable of keeping up with the data coming from your camera without losing any data. A slow drive such as a network-conneced drive is incapable of receiving data as fast as it comes from your camera.

Mr. Tacit brings up a valid point.
When exporting from the camera, you're exporting at speeds so extraordinary that a network can't handle it. This is why early cameras only used FireWire and not USB (when it was USB 1) for handling video, and still prefer FireWire over USB 2. The wire between your camera and comptuer is carrying hundreds of megabytes a second, which a typical network can't process (and maybe even handle) at that speed.
