Word 2001 running under classic on an iMAC G5
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:36:58 AM »
One of the Journalism Labs again.  I can't seem to break them of using old Word 2001 under classic and it'll work fine most of the time but then you'll try to save a file and it won't let you (saying the disk is full or you don't have permission).   I want to get them to use ABIWORD but they don't want to learn anything new (odd notion in a school).  I was able to cut and paste the text into a Textedit file and could save it but I wondered whether anyone else has known this problem!

I vaguely recall this prob [or a similar one] from ages ago, and if I remember correctly, it had to do w/ Word's default of saving files to a network drive.

I thik if you overwrite the default directory path in the save dialog to a local one [i.e., on that workstation] or maybe change Word's Save Prefs to point to the local HD [and not a networked drive], it will fix this.

I didn't even know Word 2001 was available for the Mac Classic. I thought that Office 98 was the last available for 9.

I suspect that I didn't state the problem I was having clearly enough but they're trying to save to a local drive: desktop, subfolder, flashdrive, none of these will give any message from Word except the cryptic one of the drive being full.  The account they are using is a standard account, not an administrative one; but originally I was trying to restrict them from running certain things using "Parental Controls" and they've mostly figured out how to get around that so I turned it off!  I've checked the rights and repaired them just in case.

My solution, as stated, was to try to get them entirely out of the classic environment and software.  I've already gotten them into Indesign CS instead of the old Pagemaker and I'm trying to get them to use Abiword.

I'm going to experiment with this at home or there over the summer and see if I can get to the bottom of this!

I used to occasionally have this problem with Word 2001. I would copy and paste into a new document and save that without a problem. I never figured out why it was happening, however.
