Those seem to be the latest figures available. As you can see from the petrol price, the GBP is not far off double the US$

To repeat Frances' answer to another point: I bloody well wish!  The Government has this theory that if they make fuel expensive enough, people will switch to buses and trains, a theory that might be great in cities like London and Birmingham, but public transport in rural areas is patchy to say the least. I lived in one Oxfordshire village where anyone asking when the next bus came through got the reply "Tuesday". And I'm not joking!! Heaven alone knows what it must be like in the Shetlands...
On the other hand, the Orkneys (between the Shetlands and mainland) boast the world's shortest scheduled flight lasting about two minutes. I heard somewhere that the record was something like 91 seconds. Bet there's not many routes where you can knock nearly 25 per cent off the journey time. Apparently it is subsidised by the Government as a vital lifeline to the remote islands, so maybe SOME of our taxes go somewhere useful. You can "take the flight" here

Frances: When I took a solo tour of the north of Scotland way back in 1996 (long story I won't go into), fuel was a good bit dearer then too. Also, outside any but the largest towns and cities, the only brand you could buy was BP.  While wandering the Highlands I quickly learned that when you did see a filling station - you filled up!

Too right!

When I go south with the lorry, I fill up everywhere and it is a damned sight cheaper than in Shetland.

Fuel is a joke here and then they wack on the charge for a 4x4 which is a necessity and not a luxury.

Just let me at 'em!  Bloody Chelsea Tractors taking one child to school.

Last week, the radio stations here in Washington State, were reporting that gas usage in our state has declined by 10%, since 1999.  My gas usage has dropped even more than that, because I'm really scheduling my trips now, and trying to think about combining work trips and shopping trips to make the most economic sense.  And, I'm using my motorcycle a LOT more than I used to. . . And the price of gas now is pretty much below $3/gal (regular unleaded) around here, but they're still predicting $4/gal by the end of the summer. . .

A simple solution to high summer gas prices would be to move election day to July 4th.

Nobody would vote when that fell on a weekend.

Gas has gone down to under $3 here also. I haven't done an analysis of my driving patterns (though I do have records which I could tally) but I don't think my driving habits have changed much. We drove our cars fewer miles the last two summers. My younger son was in Germany, and Iowa those summers!

Unleaded regular is $2.69 at the Citco station here in S. Pasadena Florida. Being close to Venezuela makes the transporting of fuel cost lower and thus the price at the pump. There are worst oil barons in the world than Hugo, and though he, like so many other leaders, break their own laws to stay in control, he has, according to friends who live in Venezuela, made a positive difference in many a life. Whether you’re opposed to corrupt governments or corrupt corporations the one thing we can all agree on is, if given the freedom to do as they please either would exploit you. I haven’t purchased Exxon fuel since the Alaskan oil spill, not because they had an accident, but because they have refused to take responsibility for it and used their power to circumvent the law.

So Hugo is not a responsible global partner and Exxon is not a responsible global corporation. Most if not all oil producing nations and oil suppliers have done unspeakable acts in order to transform crude into petrodollars, and we all condone their actions by fiat deciding with our cash which of the latest tyrant is the best of the bunch.

For me, all fuel being equal, I’ll give my cash to the best entertainer in the industry who also happens to have the lowest price which I suspect is Hugo at the moment.
