Make a new account the administrator account?
« on: June 14, 2007, 03:56:28 AM »
Background

I just bought a new dual core 2.4 GHz 17" MacBook Pro. And, I was trying to migrate from a bootable hard drive that  cloned from my dual2 GHz PPC G5. Using the Migration Wizard, I moved all pertinent data from PPC system to the Laptop hard drive. In doing so, I had to set up a new account, Account B. The laptop's original account is the administrator account.

Problems

1)The volumes associated with the external laptop hard drive show up on the desktop
but the PPC OS 10.4.9 does not show up when I try to switch to as the startup system. My guess is that the Intel-based laptop does not recognize the PPC OS 10.4.9 as bootable. However, When I go to the migrated account B, everything works well except I have to renter the passwords for some applications.

2) The biggest problem is that the migrated Account B is not the Administration account. The administration account is the original laptop account, Account A.

What I want to do is make Account B the administration account and the delete the original Account A. Is this possible? If so how?

Thanks for any help you can give me on this matter,

Have you tried following?
In System Preferences, choose Accounts, and make your Account B be the administrator.

Antony,

Thanks for the info. Hoever when I checked, both Account A and Account B were listed as Administrator!! So, I am planning to eject the external drive that contains Account B and then connect thelaptop directly to my dual G5 PPC. I will then migrate directly.  By the way, I was puzzled by the fact that both accountsx were administrators. I didn.t think that was possible.

Your original instinct was correct.  You cannot boot an Intel mac with a PPC version of OS X.

ANTONY,

Thanks for your advice. However, when I checked both Account A and Account B were designated as administrators!! What I think I will do is shut down the external drive connected to the laptop that contained Account B (and all my critical software) then I will connect the laptop to the my main system (dual PPC G5) and migrate that way. Therefore, I should have on admin account (I hope).

I was surprised to see both accounts desinated as Administrator. Is it possible to delete one of these accounts?

You can have as many accounts designated as Administrator as you wish (minimum of 1 of course).  You can change this by going to Accounts in system preferences and checking or unchecking the box that says "allow user to administer this computer".

Steve

Again the only real problem you have is that the PPC OS CANNOT boot your Intel Macbook pro.

Well I bit the bullet, erased the laptop's drive, reinstalled the OS from the installation disks, and then migrated from the G5 to the laptop via FireWire. The Migration Assistant was excellent although there a few things that didn't work when they were moved to the laptop. Some require an update so they work with an Intel processor and some needed their passwords reinstalled.

When I get everything working on the laptop to my satisfaction, I will backup the laptop to an external 800 MHz FireWire drive.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and comments.,
