Back... to post why I haven't been online for a while.
« on: June 17, 2007, 11:56:08 AM »
Hey everyone smile.gif

Today, I can complete a 3 week search for a flat for me and Smiley to be together, cost me alot of energy, sweat, stress and nearly some blood also sweatingbullets.gif
So the last weeks I found how stressing it is to find something decent to live in here in London, for a good price (I guess a "good price" is just how you feel it is off course), but I have seen places... well... one place in particular, if you put something like that on the market in Belgium you get prosecuted for it, and people in London really still pay alot of money to live there, amazing.

First thing that went wrong for me was the use off an agency sad.gif
Not gonna say what agency cause I am sure they only worked in the guidelines set up for them, and probably how most of them work here in London but it did gave me a stressy event.
I found a really nice appartment with them (close to Elephant & Castle for those that know London*), a place we (me and Smiley) feel we could pay when we were together.
But the thing is, She is not here for another month so I didn't wanted to give her name on the contract, also cause if I did I would have to pay £75 fee for her name so they would do a background check on her... and she's in the US.
And at the end, although all was going well the agency told me that they can't rent me the place based on my income.
The thing is that I have a job here, to be considered as being "temporary" although I work 6 months for them now, and... even worse... the agency could not take in consideration my freelance time cause it doesn't give me a fixed income that I can proove off wallbash.gif
They said I could get the place if I was willing to pay 3 months deposit... aaaargh...
I got so stressed out... what does it proove when I pay 3 months deposit for the place? does that all the sudden proove that I can pay the place for a year?

The coming days I decided never to use an agency in London again, their rules are sooooo out dated and when you use one, all they do is hold you down in your search for a better thing.
I had it before with a job agency also, it's really ridiculous.

So I had to start it all over again, and the two weeks after were really busy.
At the end Smiley, in her time after work (and abit at work... shhh) searched for places on the net (on gumtree and Loot) and mailed them to me.
Then when I got home I found them in my mailbox ready to call them and see if they were any good.
So it's a good thing she could check up websites like that, on that time since it goes really fast here in London, most things, when I called for them were already gone ohmy.gif

But we did found something... although not all our wishes came true, one of Smiley's wishes couldn't be more on it than this place.
She said it has to be close to easy public transportation in and out the city and... well this place in Camden is what we got (link to Google Maps) smile.gif
Right next to Mornington Crecsent tube station, any closer and we would be living inside that building itself (although that would be cool hehehe).

Now I just have to wait to get broadband there again sad.gif
So that's the reason why I won't be online for a week or two from tomorrow on.
The good thing is that they have cable there so that's what I am getting.

Next weekend will be a trip to Belgium also, to get some more stuff to our place now and then... just a few weeks more before Smiley will arrive yahoo.gif

Makes me feel a little "guilty by association" (in that I am British and am embarrassed at how you have been treated in the UK). Haven't had to rent a place since 1969, so am a little out of touch with that side of things.

However, am also very glad you and Smiley have got things sorted out. She had the big advantage that she could be on line at times when most of the UK is watching TV or asleep. Looking forward to hearing you've got moved in and settled down. smile.gif

Stress, but good stress, because soon you and Smiley will be together in your own place; you'll have cable internet, and life will be just so much better because you'll be facing it all together. smile.gif

Well... don't worry about it, cause it's probably just the difference of those agencies, in how they work compared to how Belgian agencies work, and I am not used to that.

That's the thing, I have to do it alone for now, everything I do here is on my own.
Sure Smiley knows what I am doing but I just wish we could really do it all together.
By the time she comes over I am so used living here that it won't be new for my anymore.
Then again, we probably stay at this place for a year (or less?) and then find our own place together.

You're a busy fellow! Hope things settle down for you soon. smile.gif

To tag on to kris's post below, around here, it seems that one month's rent is the standard deposit amount. I haven't rented in a long time, but the one time I used a "finder" I can't recall paying a fee. It must have been quite small.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Hope all works out for you and Smilie, Marcel.  smile.gif

FYI, here in the US it is quite the norm for renters to pay a couple months "upfront" to be held in case the individual doesn't pay or leaves the apartment in need of repairs. And many agencies charge one month's rent as a fee for finding the apartment though sometimes the owner of the place pays the fee.
