Does anyone know the address used in Software Update?
« on: June 21, 2007, 09:41:58 AM »
I'm looking around on my office G4 to try and figure out the actual address used to do the "automatic" software updates.  There's probably a log file somewhere where this info is kept but who knows?   dntknw.gif

I think he means the 'port' that SU uses to go check the updates list at Apple. I'd suggest searching for that info in the Tech Support area of Apple's site. I'm surprised that kelly hasn't provided you with a link yet! tease.gif

No, I know it's using Port 80 (HTML) but what I want to know is where it's going to get the download because that website is blocked by our "new" misbegotten firewall program and if I know where it's going I get get it put on the allowable list.  I suspect that there must be a program that "sniffs" around and tells you what's processes are going on during one of those update downloads!

Thanks Dreambird, I'll try that out!  I had thought there was a built in tool to do this; perhaps something you had to run from Terminal!

One of the System Logs would probably tell you this. But can't you tell the firewall to accept certain, specific domain names? dntknw.gif Basically a 'whitelist'?

Oh, this is a big commercial network firewall program and they have turned it on with everything blocked and need to know what to turn back on.  It blocks most of the pictures people have pasted into this forum but "gratefully" not TS itself!  They can allow all of Apple.com's normal stuff with the exception of forum's there and the automatic download apparently!

Don't you feel safer now?! tease.gif

But you can still access the non-automatic downloads, correct?

You know I didn't try; I'll have to ask the guy at our jail program (who first brought this problem up) to ask if he tried that.

Your "new misbegotten" firewall should keep a log of refused connections...no? If port 80 is open, then it should work unless specific domains are excluded. You may need to investigate more than one log file and more than one config file.

let's see...there's the router firewall, then the third party firewall, then the Mac OS firewall. Any more running?
