I don't know how usefull this will be to most folks

I just got my broadband connection upgraded to 20Mb.  However it does need a little tweaking (remember, I have friends in low places )


Firstly I had to switch back to Ethernet from Wireless.  Why? Because the tweak can only be done on ethernet.  Instead of letting the system auto configure the connection I needed to set it to 100Mb and full duplex.  

I don't know why this works.  I've been having talks on IRC and no one has the answer.  

All I know is that on an ftp/usenet connection the difference is 5MB greater using the tweak.  As we all know, on the Internet itself the connection is only as fast as the slowest link so your mileage may vary

And 20Mb? Jeez - must be nice. Rogers just informed us we'd been "upgraded" to 8 Mb. I just ran a test and I'm getting 7.9, so that's good. But it's still only just over a third of what you're seeing!

I was a bit confused also but on second read I think he means that the tweak is not letting the connection choose the fastest setup but you have to set it purposely to 100Mb and full duplex. Then it will be able to handle the faster speed.

That's correct.  

The only answer that anyone has come up with so far is that It may be down to the way the cable modems are set up.

My ISP is "allegedly"   working on an even faster service. 50Mb!!!

I'd guess it has more to do with the fact that you're guaranteeing that you're not using half and therefore keeping the communication at the most optimal for your setup.

Just a thought, though. Not sure if it's correct or not.

Ah, must have been having a dim moment there. At some point before we moved I entered my settings manually as well and things seemed faster. Left them that way (I think - not at home right now) and am getting the speed that Rogers says I should.
