Safe Boot problem
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:38:23 PM »
I have many a time done a safe boot with no problems, but recently, taking to heart the advice in a recent thread, decided to Safe Boot prior to downloading Software Updates.   But my G5 (Power PC Tower, with 10.4.10) just refused.  I did the usual, 1) Shut Down.  2) Start up and hold down the shift key on hearing the Boing and not release it until the grey cogwheel starts.  But every time I get a regular Start Up.
What's amiss?  And how to correct it?   Maybe I'm just drinking too much of my favorite tipple  rolleyes.gif

Try it by pressing the shift key before hearing the startup chime. You may not be hitting it fast enough. And you might as well keep it pressed until you see the Login dialog! What else you got to do?! smile.gif

Have you tried Single-User mode? Command-s.
BTW, you are using a wired ( Apple ) keyboard, aren't you? Thinking.gif

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system

Jim, thanks for that, particularly your BTW.  No, I was using an Apple wireless board.  As soon as I switched to a wired board there was no problem. Now what I would like to know is why, Oh Why, can't one do a safe boot with a wireless board? Thinking.gif

Because the drivers for the wireless keyboard do not load until after the computer starts booting.

You might have better success if you keep holding down the Shift key until the screen changes to blue and you see the startup screen, but it may be that you can't do this with a wireless keyboard at all.

Thanks Tacit.  I'm now enlightened.  Continuing to hold down the shift key forever, using a wireless board doesn't work.  I had previously tried a variety of options — nothing worked, obviously for the reason you explained.   So, next time I need to do a safe boot, I'll just have to plug in the old board.

But I do like to keep my desk as clutter free as poss.  Recently invested in the new Logitech laser mouse (couldn't get on with Apple's wireless job) and have to say it's fantastic.  Nine separate programmable buttons.  Makes life a doddle — so long as you can remember which button does what  toothgrin.gif
