Here's a hint I got from Dave Nanian (SuperDuper!)

I had queried him about reducing the size of sparseimages.

These can grow over time, because they don't reclaim the space taken by deleted files.

Anyway, his solution was to activate Terminal and type in:

hdiutil compact (Leave a space after compact)

Then drag the sparseimage file into the terminal window after the space. (the path will follow, so no reason to include it)

Hit the Return key
Sit back and enjoy.
Click on the sparseimage when thru to see the new size.

Then type Exit in the Terminal window when done.

And quit out of the Terminal App.

Thanks Dave for this valuable tip.
