Gray text in Thunderbird
« on: August 11, 2007, 12:06:52 PM »
When I read email digests in Thunderbird, I often find the text goes from black to a soft gray. The digests are sent in plain text, and I have TB set to show only in plain text. The gray text is difficult to read. I'm not sure what causes this to happen, and have yet to find anything in preferences to cover it -- but I'd sure like to be able to change it.

Without actually using colors ... this is what I see:

CODE
line of text (in black plain text)
blah blah blah

Susan
-- (begin gray plain text)
Susan's sig

--------
more digest text in gray plain text

The only thing I can possibly think of is that the " -- " causes TB to change the text color, but I don't really know.

Anyhoo ... if anyone understands this program and this prob and can offer a solution to correct it, I'd appreciate it.

Can you look at the raw download? The raw text of the message? Do you have html rendering enabled?

I'm just wondering if there is non-compliant HTML in the message...

Yes I can see the source, and there is no odd html codes in message source or within the digest itself (where it would show up as numbers, symbols, etc).

No html rendering enabled - TB is set for plain text only.

Also, this happens no matter where the digest originates. Yahoo, a listserve at a university, a private email list serve, etc.

I found the answer, now I just have to figure out exactly where the chrome folder should reside (I don't seem to have one for TB).

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Signature_display_color

By default, Thunderbird displays the signature text, and the signature separator ("-- ") above it, in the color gray. If you wish to change this to another color, insert the following into your "userContent.css" file.

CODE
/*
 * Change display color of text and links in signature
 */
.moz-txt-sig, .moz-signature {
  color: black !important;
}
.moz-txt-sig > a, .moz-signature > a {
  color: blue !important;
}

The above example will make the signature text black and links in signatures blue. You can use other colors as desired.

Notes:

    * This changes only the way that signatures are displayed in Thunderbird and will not affect the color of any signatures that you use with outgoing messages. However, recipients who use Thunderbird normally see gray signatures unless they have changed the setting too. Other mail clients might do similar things.
    * If you use an HTML signature file, it can specify its own color for the text but not for the signature separator ("-- ").

I assume you've tried the standard command-f function in Finder?

Well, I don't have/use TB but I do have a "Chrome" folder in ~/Documents/Mozilla/Profiles/default/qhy9jxzw.sit/chrome. I suspect yours may be in a slightly differently named folder. Thinking.gif Try "qhy8jxzw.sit". wink.gif

You are soooo funny. harhar.gif

Yes, command-F, and even ... spotlight.

I dug further in the TB help stuff, found where the folder and file should be, created it myself (the directions said that might be the case) ... and ... TB ignores the file.

Oh well.

Some files don't get no respect! sad.gif

I don't know how to get an app to recognize files it didn't create in the first place. However, a re-install might lead TB to realize there is a file around that it normally can use. dntknw.gif

Or, you can nose around for other "Profile" folders that TB might be using...

Or whinecomplain to the developers...

Now this might be fun. wink.gif  I also want to jog them and find out when they are going to create a really dynamic email program combining the best of Eudora and TB.
