How to link to a web cam?
« on: August 17, 2007, 12:45:02 AM »
We are trying to set up a live web cam on a unique rock carving project in our town.
A PC guy is setting it up. Our aim is for anyone to click on a link on a website that will take you to watch the carving in a separate window.

Today we tested it...
I go to an IP Address and log in.
I don't see any image, but mostly a white screen.
It has these links - Video Display,
And a message to download something called "ActiveX".
I cannot see a link to download this.

I asked a PC friend to do the same.
They can see the ActiveX link, download it, and then use the web cam.

Does this mean the web cam will not work on a Mac OS10.3.9?
Even when we have the link established on the website, will a Mac still be hampered?
I tried Safari and Firefox, thinking it may be a browser thing. Made no difference.

Could be a bummer!

That's a shame, because ActiveX is MS Windows proprietary technology.

Option may be Apple's free opensource Darwin Streaming Server which comes in MacOSX, Linux and Windows versions. Did I mention it's free?

However, even if using Windows technology for the server, it should be possible to make it available on all platforms. The web is supposed to be platform independent... whistling.gif

What do I tell the web camera PC installer to get him to use different software so that all platforms can see the web cam?
Keep it simple for me so I can suggest another option for him.

My fingers are crossed, cause I'm in charge of this volunteer project and right now I won't be able to see it.
Not a good testimonial for Macs!

The problem is not Macs, the problem is MS's proprietary software.  ActiveX is a Win only, IE only technology.  If you use Firefox, on a win machine, you can't view the web cam.  Suggest your friend use a more universal software.

Google webcam software and...

Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.
