Getting there
« on: October 06, 2007, 08:27:56 PM »
Last December, I started finishing my basement. We moved in, it was framed out already.
I wired it up and took this shot:

today we got the colors for the walls! biggrin.gif

Purple (a shade of it, not sure what exactly) for the bathroom...

and Sand for the main room:

That's the TV room. We have another area for my computer, a spare bedroom, and a storage/laundry room.

We still have to finish painting, install doors, have the drop ceiling put in, and carpeted. So, I have been a bit busy  whistling.gif with this along with my family, work and school!

Nice Job John, I was glad to see you installed a vapor barrier over the outside walls. #47
I do have a few questions; did you use blue board in the bathroom? It looks white from my house.  whistling.gif

I take it you have a forced hot air system, do you need to upgrade the furnace, I'm just guessing @ 1400 sq. ft.?

Do you plan on insulating the ceiling for temperature or sound control?

Y'all looked like you had some fun!  rolleyes.gif

what's a basement? unsure.gif

I like the purple!
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Thanks!

As for the bathroom, yes, we did use the mold resistant drywall. It's not blue anymore apparently.

We aren't upgrading our furnace as we just got a new one when we moved in. If it gets too cool, we'll just use space heaters.

Nice work! Must be nice to work in an area that didn't near demolition first. wink.gif

I like the metal stops on the studs to prevent anyone from nailing though the electrical wire. clap.gif

Lookin' very livable! clap.gif

We don't use our basement as "living space", but we did paint the walls white and tile the floor with a mostly white pattern. It sure brightens up the "dungeon". (Oh, we added more lights and windows than the builder was going to provide also.)

Great idea to use the space under a house! Not always an option in some areas. Looks like a great addition to your 'living' space, especially on those warm (steamy) Summer days! whew.gif

Only thing I'd suggest is that you put that toilet nearer the shower...wallbash.gif

I read about putting metal stops in a home improvement book. Thought it sounded pretty smart.  sweatingbullets.gif Yeah, it is nice to look at my work and realize that I did all the work except for framing (done before we moved in), drywall (I helped hang it though!) and the taping/mudding (we wanted it done better than I could have done it!). And all of this with 0 prior knowledge on how to do it!

I've probably related this here before but your 'drywalling' brought back memories...

I had been granted several weeks off after Fred sold the aircraft I was checked out in since the line to the school house was quite long. I decided that the newly found free time was great for finishing off the roughed in attic room. While working on the drywall, my youngest who was about 5 at the time was up there 'helping' me with his own small hammer. I knew he was busy by the 'bang, bang' bang, thud, thud, thud' of his hammer. Little did I realize, until I turned to get another sheet that what he was doing was knocking off those silly square corners of the un-used stack of wall board! eek2.gif laugh.gif oops.gif I quickly suggested that he go downstairs and help Mom with lunch! smile.gif

Did you get a lot of "help" from your young lad? wink.gif

Looking good, John.

Just a 'general interest' question... up here (MN) if we put a spare bedroom in the basement we are required to have 'egress' windows (openings large enough for an adult to exit them) and window wells installed.... is there such a requirement there?

I have no idea. We do have windows, but they are small.

I'd be surprised if there is not a requirement for an egress window from a basement sleeping room in every state. Not only the window, but the window well must be larger. In planning for the possibility of a bedroom in our basement, we had a larger window and window well put in. Of course, once the foundation is poured, cutting out a larger opening is a major undertaking.

Having said that, we had a sleeping room in the basement of our last home for nearly ten years. Enforcement is a bigger issue than safety, IMHO. The code has to address the worst case scenario; an older home, a negligent landlord, a less than savvy tenant. No code official is likely to inspect the house to see if the room is used as a sleeping room. If you know they're coming....

With a good furnace, newer appliances, new wiring, a fire is unlikely. Just don't allow anything capable of starting a fire (matches, etc.) to be taken to the basement. When you sell the house, you cannot claim a bedroom down there unless it meets code.

To clarify a bit, the code requires two exits from a level with a sleeping room. In the case of a basement or second story, that's usually a window. (...and a "ladder" to get up to the window from the basement, or down from the second floor, in which case the fire department provides it). If a basement has two independent exits (rare, but it happens with houses built on a steep slope) then the bedroom window doesn't have to be big enough to crawl through.
