installing cable for internet on 9.2
« on: October 06, 2007, 07:30:59 AM »
Yesterday the cable tech from Time Warner arrived to make the cable internet connection for my Mac. I had dialup. When I made the appointment last week, it was confirmed that the installation is compatible with my system 9.2. The guy couldn't do it - neither of my browsers (Netscape 7 or IE 5.1) would get online. He was unfamiliar with Macintosh 9.2 and he didn't know a certain internet configuration that he needed to make on the computer. He looked at TCP/IP and searched the control panels but he didn't know what exactly to do. Neither did the tech support at T-W which he telephoned. He attached the cable modem which he said is on correctly and the lights are blinking correctly.  But he left without completing the installation. He said he would try to get someone else who is more familiar with Mac to come on another day. The modem he attached says: "Cable RF Mac Address: 00197DAA805A."  The model number is U10CO18. And I believe it's a 1.3 gig. Does anyone know what internet setting or preference he should be looking for when and if he returns? (Or can I make the setting myself?) Thanks.

You need to make the settings using the TCP/IP control panel.

Set to:

connect via Ethernet.
Obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP.

That should be all you need.
A whole lot about me: www.xeromag.com/franklin.html

Yep. Did it work?
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I selected DHCP and no IP addy came up. There are also other numerical settings on TCP/IP from my dialup connection. Do they need to be removed?

Yes the DNS address for the old modem must be removed and the new DNS #’s you need to get from your new provider (I’m with Verizon and the #’s are 4.2.2.5 and 4.2.2.6) Without those #’s, my system will lose connection in a VERY short, matter of time!
So many Mac’s, so little time!

You can try just deleting those DNS numbers. Well, they should definitely be deleted, they are probably wrong now, going to your old ISP. But they are usually "Optional" anyway, so you can try just leaving the box blank until/if you can get the new numbers from the new service provider. It should require no more than a simple phone call to them. For some reason they seem to want to keep the numbers somewhat difficult to find. wallbash.gif Maybe it gives them something to use their tech support crew for when working with a Mac? dntknw.gif

And don't forget to click the "Renew lease" button on the Control Panel just to be sure the modem realizes it's supposed to communicate! smile.gif

Let us know how things go. wink.gif
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system

Tech support by phone fixed this. It was: TCP/IP, Ethernet, DCHP Client/and then it autogenerated the numbers. Thanks to all  of you for your help
