jb - We can't watch that story in this country (Canadian rules, not American)!  If it's about a domino thing that takes place in a village in the Andes and goes outside and the chain includes all sorts of furniture, cans, and other things it's already been in some thread at TS!

This was in a thread I posted on November 10th, 2007:

Thanks for the link gunug! Just spent the last few minutes chasing silk, being nearly electrocuted, remembering never to leave an aircraft until it's on the ground and horrified at close to that ground some stupid pilots fly! laugh.gif Had to stop and send a few links to some other aviation friends, also! smile.gif

JB: Can't watch it in UK either - "CTV Broadband cannot be viewed in your country". But wouldn't mind betting some clever-clogs has posted it on YouTube if you can give us a few more clues about what to look for... smile.gif

Gunug et all. No, this domino is not the same. It is mathematically interesting. This is the first time I find that a video is limited to its country of origin. I have made a Quicktime copy of the video and have asked the Discovery channel (the canadian one) permission to upload it to YouTube. Awaiting their reply.

I wouldn't count on getting permission.

Why is Discovery Broadband only available in Canada?

The programming for Discovery Broadband can come from a variety of sources: Discovery Canada’s production house Exploration Production Inc., other independent producers, and Discovery Communications Inc. In all cases we only carry Canadian distribution rights to these programs.

I think it's about time for a universal "minimal" set of rights for this sort of thing so people aren't always tripping over stuff like this.  Did you hear about the new Western Digital drives that are mean to allow you remote access to files yet are crippled by DRM-ware that won't allow you to share media files:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/12/07/we...pled_harddrive/

I also thought the new words to the Canadian anthem were interesting:

The initial fear regarding the DRM on the Western Digital has been found to be less than what first appeared.

QUOTE
Many of these services are intentionally limited, and this one is no different: Mio blocked shared media over an internet connection long before Western Digital acquired the startup earlier this year.

It's Windows only - so Mac and Linux users can continue to use Samba. Western Digital helpfully included a page describing how to set up Samba. WLAN users aren't inhibited from these restrictions, and these are so easily circumvented (share the user/password among friends) as to be little more than a token nuisance.

So who's kidding who, here?

Well, blogs have dropped the story of the "scandal" like a hot potato. The anticipated consumer boycott fizzled away when word got out that it wasn't doing anything deceptive. It's marketed as a placeshifting/backup drive, it's hard to see how a lawsuit could argue otherwise. Many Linux users simply format the drives anyway, and carry on as normal.

What is scary is that about 7 years ago SD cards were almost going to be totally "Secure" from any kind of copyright infringement.
