He had suffered heart problems and famously died after a one-night show at a small theatre. He did some curtain calls...

I don't think they were well known outside the UK, but they were definitely the tops here. One Christmas special, during their heyday in the 70s, drew something like 18 million viewers in a nation of 55 million. Pretty good going....
That led me in turn to YouTube for what has to be their most famous sketch - with guest,
conductor Andrew Preview (sic). It's 36 years since that was first shown, but I still weep with laughter. Previn was just one of the many stars who just loved being made fun of on the Morecambe & Wise Show.
