I was lucky enough to go to a presentation by Mike Bombich (the guy who wrote Carbon Copy Cloner and also an Apple Software Support wizard for the St. Louis area) about deploying and managing MAC systems. I won't pretend to have absorbed it all because it really should have been a week long hands on class instead of a 2 hour presentation. The key idea we took away is that we could handle labs full of MAC's in more or less the same way we've been doing XP machines (making images on a network server, installing them, and managing labs). I don't know when we're actually going to be able to do this but it was very interesting. The key is NetRestore:

NetRestore
NetRestore is a software deployment tool developed in AppleScript Studio. You can use NetRestore to restore a master disk image to a computer's hard disk while that disk image is hosted locally, on a network via AFP, or on the internet via HTTP. NetRestore can also be used in conjunction with NetBoot to fully automate the deployment of a lab full of machines. NetRestore was designed to be very easy to use, yet flexible, powerful, and extensible. Finally, NetRestore is based on the Mac OS X native version of Apple Software Restore, so your deployment will be fast and accurate.
