Do we need Lotus Notes?
« on: February 06, 2008, 02:38:36 PM »
I notice that Lotus Notes 8.5 beta is being offered to Mac users, which I accessed through Version Tracker:

IBM Lotus Notes 8.5 Client basic configuration for Mac OS X
notes8x_macosx_basic_beta.dmg  (190MB)

IBM Lotus Notes 8.5 beta for Mac OS X
notes8x_macosx_standard_beta.tar  (730MB)

This is as far as I got....not wishing to download such a heavy program.

I wondered if any members had any options on the worth or likely unworth of such an offering?

Larry, my only experience with Lotus Notes was at the newspaper where I worked part-time for a couple of years (Eagle Tribune in North Andover, MA). It was used for email and was an integral part of their editing system. That component was undoubtedly custom - I don't see anything that looks like it in their standard, off-the-shelf version. For email I didn't find it wonderful, but knowing the ET, it was probably some ancient version. They were still using OS 9 18 months ago, and for all I know still are. rolleyes.gif

What did you have in mind to do with it?

Larry,

Unless you are going to 'build' interactive applications or will be working from home on said same interactive applications I don't know of a good reason to acquire Lotus Notes.

My exposure to LN was also at my last place of employment and it was installed on an IBM AS400 system for creation of sales reporting and data acquisition programs.

It's not something to 'get' just to 'have' (personal opinion  whistling.gif ) It's just too large and unwieldy a piece of software.

That being said, IF you have a specific need/purpose for it who am I to discourage...
