Massive storm rips up Georgia Dome!
« on: March 15, 2008, 04:33:53 AM »
I was watching KU play Nebraska in the Big 12 last night (Go Hawks!!!) and I didn't hear about the
Georgia dome being ripped up by a great storm in the middle of the SEC championship:

QUOTE
ATLANTA (AP)—Alabama and Mississippi State were locked in a thrilling game at the Southeastern Conference tournament. Suddenly, everyone started looking toward the roof of the Georgia Dome, wondering where that rumbling sound was coming from.

What they saw was terrifying.

Metal scaffolding and a temporary video board swaying back and forth. The huge fabric roof flapping like a flag in a stiff breeze. Two large panels above the upper deck starting to peel away. Small chunks of insulation and debris drifting toward the court.

A possible tornado, said the National Weather Service.

No doubt about it, said those who went through it—players, coaches and some 18,000 fans.

“I thought it was a tornado or a terrorist attack,” said Mississippi State guard Ben Hansbrough, who was guarding Alabama’s Mykal Riley when the clatter began above their heads, growing into an angry growl that, yes, sounded like an approaching freight train.

Man, if no one was seriously injured then they were very lucky!  I guess they'll have to move to a very small venue to finish the championship and there will be a lot of unhappy fans!

WOW.gif that's terrible...and yes...some very lucky people. However; as the story said "NO WAY to satisfy all those fans. Another storm a-brewing for sure."

That could be the first SEC basketball game ever postponed on account of rain. I'm sure the baseball coaches can relate.

I haven't had the TV on yet today. I hope no one was seriously hurt.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I didn't hear of any fatalities today; but the damage was a lot more wide spread in the light of day!

Later: I went to check my email and found out two people were killed!  I was watching news a lot yesterday
because I was trying out my HD/TV converter box and didn't hear that.

At least the crowd had not been "dismissed" out into the streets when the tornado passed through. It could have been much worse. Very sad that two lives were lost.
