eMac. 1 GHz. 384 mb RAM. 10.3.9
55.9 gb HD. 33 gb free.

I'm trying to load Tiger on my wife's eMac so she can use her new iPod nano which needs 10.4.8.
She only uses MS Office, Mail and Safari. No heavy usage.

I purchased a Tiger CD Install pkg. All her documents, music and photos were backed up.
I had to insert 13 of 16 Install CDs. I have 3 left over which it never asked me to insert.
What's on the last 3?

Then Set up Assistant came up and said "connecting" for 10 minutes and it went no further. So I closed that.
I upgraded to 10.4.11 from apple.com. Everything seems fine at this point.

Then I downloaded 10.4.8 Combined Update.
When I tried to install it, this came up...
"Cannot install on this volume. This volume does not meet requirements for this update"

Any idea what the problem is? Is it a lack of RAM?
What to do now?

Raven,

Why are you trying to run the 10.4.8 Combo on a 10.4.11 machine?

Try downloading the 10.4.11 Combo instead. Then you will have it for future needs.

10.4.11 should run the iPod Nano just fine, it probably needed 10.4.8 at a minimum to update correctly, but there should be no problem that I'm aware of to do this with 10.4.11.

And in order to go to 10.4.8 you'd have to wipe the install and do it again, you can't go backwards that I'm aware of.

And 384 MB of RAM is really cutting it to close for Tiger, IMO. I think I read somewhere that the minimum recommended RAM is at least 512 MB. I'm running 1.5 GB in my iBook, and have at least a GB in my desktop computer.

What a funny co-incidence to see this thread... I'm updating my G4 DA to Tiger as I write this, and was looking around in the forum to see about which software update method seems to work the best!

Raven, at 10.4.11 you're as up to date as you can be without going to 10.5 (Leopard) - you can't ever install a previous update over the more recent update, and in this case there is no reason you would want to. 10.4.11 has all the most recent security patches and minor enhancements; it's a very stable and mature OS.

But I agree with Chris - definitely time to get some more RAM.

Either get one stick or two - the eMac has no requirement for matched sticks. Take out the 128 MB and put in the 512 if you only get one.

Well, so far so good.

Took about an hour or so to do all the installs from sticking the Tiger DVD in and doing the Combo Updater. I did not, however, install the iTunes 7.6.1 update having seen that most folks who've installed it are still having trouble of some sort.

It was very good to be able to browse the TS archives and the current forum for thoughts on the Combo Updater and the standalone methods.

Pretty much know what I'm doing but it never hurts to check before installing a new OS!

And yes, Harv, I had a verifiable and bootable back-up before I did it!

And oh my, what a difference installing 10.4 as opposed to what we used to have to go through in OS7-9.x when installing a New OS! Everything seems to be working just fine, just repaired permissions several times, and off and running I go!

Raven, I hope that you got the answer to your question earlier in this thread!

Thanks for that. I misread the numbers.
I thought 10.4.11 came BEFORE 10.4.8 like in 10.4.80!!

My wife actually loaded up her nano and it worked. I couldn't figure out why.
Duh. Now I know.

I WILL get a 512 mb RAM chip.
Are there instructions somewhere how to do that?
The eMac has a 128 and 256 chip in it. How can I tell which is which in order to replace the 128?

Raven, usually the RAM is labelled, so you should be able to tell. Also, check to see which slot has which RAM in your system profiler and the slots may be labelled. And the 256 may be thicker than the 128 - they sometimes stack the chips.

If listed "alphanumerically", .11 comes before .12 etc. which does come before .2 etc.

The last 3 CDs contain optional software such as the Mac OS X for Chinese computers, Mac OS X for Korean computers, and Mac OS X for Japanese computers font sets, keyboard drivers for Japanese and Chinese and Thai and Korean and Arabic and Hebrew keyboards, input managers for typing text in languages such as Arabic and Hebrew that read right to left, and other localization software for non-English/non-Roman systems.
