I downloaded the Mac beta (voice) from yahoo today and it works as advertised with both Macs and their internal mic(s).  I had a couple of older mics from a 9500 that have different mini plugs than what will fit in either the PB or the IMAC,(bigger) so I sallied forth to the local radio shack and purchased a "computer mic" and  while the plug fits, the mic does not work. rolleyes.gif Well being the OLD techie that I am I found in my parts drawer a mini plug that is the correct size and with a pair of side cutters and a sharp knife I proceeded to jury rig one of the old mics. whistling.gif Now I have a plug that fits both machines wired to an old Mac mic and guess what?? It still don't work. Groaner.gif This leads me to believe that the "pick-up" for the newer machines must be different than the older ones, and probably pc's too.

Can anyone point me in the rite direction here?? rolleyes.gif

This might explain why the old mic doesn't work with the newer Macs: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=18275

I'd suggest a USB microphone/headset. My kids both have headsets they use for WoW and Skype.

Something like this:

Just make sure it works with Macs - not all do.

Here's another - more expensive, but highly rated:

http://www.amazon.com/apple-Only-Audio-85-...135&sr=1-16

NOTE: don't buy the cheapest one you find - in our experience, the $20 and under ones tend to break easily - my younger son has duct-taped his microphone arm on!! (wires still ok - but the plastic gave way)

First, if you had a solution that worked, I'm not sure why you wanted to change! "If it ain't broke..." tongue.gif

OTOH, I've found that feedback can be a problem with the built-in mics.

But, have you checked the Sound Pref Panel for what input it is set to? I'm not sure it automagically changes when a new source or output device is used. dntknw.gif

Looks like I am batting 1000 this week. I called the mic company and they confirm it is not "mac compatible" ( but they have a usb version that is"  I got the following from the link that paddy posted:

"The previously-available Apple PlainTalk microphone is not compatible with these computers (G5 and G4)- although the PlainTalk microphone supplies a line-level signal, it does not use a standard 3.5 mm stereo miniplug, and can't be used with these systems."

Even tho the miniplug that I jury rigged LOOKs the same and has the same color coded 3 wires there must be some "APPLE"
engineered feature that prevents compatibility. Guess I will go the USB route.

ABD: U are so correct and I can live with the internal mic for a while but "feedback" background noise, and the fact that the receiving folks say it has the sound of a "speakerfone" makes it less than what I would like to have.

Also I have been to the sound Prefs and that is how I confirmed that the external Audio input would not work.  It has a neat Input level bar that shows just how you are doing.  In the case of these mic(s) "not at all"  Ohh well, what the heck

Thanks all

Logitech USB mic from Best Buy for 27 bucks did the trick and it works great.  Thanks
