Extract Stereo Audio from movie file
« on: April 10, 2008, 07:49:15 AM »
Is there software available to extract audio (stereo) from an .AVI file.

My Canon Powershot S2 IS records excellent stereo sound incorporated in the video files.

But sometimes, I just want to record stereo sound from a scene where the video changes little.
For intance, in the Spring, I would like to record the frog sounds in a swamp.
Such soothing sounds. Or crickets and katydids in late summer. Or other nature sounds.

Anybody know of software that would extract the sound track as a .MP3 file (or other audio format)?

Thanks, Jack

Check out the excellent freeware MPEG Streamclip; download and explore the options which include extracting audio. I use it to record radio as well as TV on my PVR (as well as from EyeTV on the Mac), and then convert the audio to put into iTunes. Think of it as a kind of Graphic Converter for video and audio smile.gif
I haven't used it for .AVI files, but don't see why it shouldn't work wink.gif

OK - just done a quick check and found one .avi file on my Mac - it opens in Streamclip and the File/Export Audio... option offers four formats - AIFF, MP4 AAC, MP2 and MP3.  There are also options for mono/stereo, bit rate and sample rate.

Highmac,

Worked like a charm!

I have MPEG Streamclip 1.9.1 — Did not see MP3 output option.
But it worked fine with .mp2 and .m4a output. These formats were obout 1/5 the size of .aiff output files.

Thanks mucho grande!

Now I have to take my camera down to the "swamps" in the Cuyahoga Valley NP and record some music!

Thanks, Jack
