Internet cafe help
« on: April 10, 2008, 09:16:27 AM »
I'm about to go to Italy for three weeks. This is a personal trip (actually, I'm getting married in Siena) so I won't be taking a laptop.

I anticipate using Internet cafes from time to time and I will be taking a thumb drive.

What would be a good way to create a list of clickable web site addresses that I could access using a non-Mac computer in the cafes?

I have specialized folders of bookmarks related to the trip in Safari.

I also have an Appleworks document which I have been keeping with lots of notes, but if I convert it to a PDF using the print dialogue, the links are no longer clickable.

I have thought about creating my own Web site listing the links I want, but not real sure of the most convenient way to do this.

Also, any suggestions on a quick method to create a listing of about 30 emails which I might want to have (hotel, auto rental confirmations, etc.)?
I use Entourage.

Why should getting married stop you  taking a laptop...? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Congratulations from here too. You're pretty well guaranteed good weather that far south in Europe wink.gif

This is one of the things tht social bookmarking sites like Reddit and Digg are used for.

You create a free username and password, then you list all the bookmarks you want to save. You can see your list of bookmarks from any computer anywhere in the world just by loggin on to your Digg or Reddit account and looking a your personal list.

Thomas, the easiest way to do this is to do it via your own web site - just set up a page with the links, and upload it, with a name that only you know and not linked to any other pages on your site. That way you can use it any time by going to http://www.englandphoto.com/pageoflinks.html" target="_blank">http://www.http://www.englandphoto.com/pageoflinks.html or whatever you want to call it. (Just realized that someone else, in Spain, owns thomasengland.com - that's a bummer...and they appear to be just sitting on it!)

Anyway, you can do it in Appleworks - by using the Format->Create Link->Internet menu item. It doesn't have to be pretty - just useful for you! Then save it as an HTML document and publish to your site using whatever FTP program you normally use.

All you have to remember is what the page is called!

Never really thought about using Appleworks to do web pages, but hey - whatever works! smile.gif

Edit: just realized you're using RapidWeaver for the rest of the site, so that would work just fine too. Whatever is easiest!! Or Tacit's solution - that works too.

And congratulations on your upcoming marriage! biggrin.gif

I like the idea of Reddit & Digg. That would let me add new sites while on the road.

I've tried Reddit. The early drawbacks I'm finding include the fact that the site will only let you add a new saved address once every ten minutes or so. You also have to type in a series of random letters each time to show that you are human.

Looking at Digg I didn't see any way to view just the sites which I have added. That's a dealbreaker.

Thanks for suggestions & congrats. I'm open to any other ideas.

Have you considered other options?! Maybe Seville? dntknw.gif

I assume you and your bride will be returning to the USofA? My only concern with marrying a 'foreigner' is that if something breaks it can take longer to get replacement parts...Thinking.gif

Well, it's really your decision. I can only hope that you have considered this major life-change with both your heart and your brain! laugh.gif

Wish you and your new bride all the best, a growing love and extra patience and forgiveness when problems occur. cheer.gif clap.gif wub.gif

And now, back to the scheduled program...
A third option might be to email yourself a list after you get a few copied. You could then consolidate the different massages into one giant list of links. I think most email readers should be able to recognize a url link. It might help, however, to make sure there is a "<" at the beginning and a ">" at the end of each url. Of course, if you're in a web mail situation, you don't even need an email reader program.

A dire il vero, we are both Americans and have been living together for many, many years. This just seemed like a romantic way to finally tie the knot.

Back to my question, I think I have decided to use del.icio.us to create my source for bookmarks online. Their bookmarklet makes it so easy and I can tag the entries to categorize them. Works for me.

Now my main concern is that I'll probably have to use Internet Explorer on the cafes' computers and I don't think IE uses tabs. Going back to non-tab browsing is going to be hard on me.

IE7 has tabs. smile.gif

So you just have to hope that the internet cafés are using it and not IE 6!

Great! No 'parts' problems!

Those Exploder things will probably also use Italian! Corretto? Presuppongo che potete parlare il linguaggio. I just use Dashboard! blush-anim-cl.gif tongue.gif You won't have that at those cafés, either, unless you can find a Mac one! clap.gif

You aren't taking a laptop but may I assume you will be taking your camera(s)?

And will we be privy to some of the pictures? (non private ones, that is... wink.gif )

Thomas,

More akin to a workaround, rather than a “solution”, but it would (should) work…

1. Copy all your bookmarks with their hyperlinks to an email, or, as an attachment to an email and mail that to yourself. Then, no matter where you are, as long as you have access to your email, you’re all set.
2. Should you wish to add a link, just copy your old bookmarks to a new document/email, add the new links, and resend.

FWIW, I courted my wife 18+ years before we married. Not a record, but competitive as those things go. As they say: “Marry in haste, repent in leisure”. yahoo.gif

All my best to you and your bride-  cheer.gif
