They don't explain it very well...

"Atom" is just a 'code' name for the type of CPU being used..

Newly designed from the ground up, 45nm Intel Atom processors pack an astounding 47 million transistors on a single chip measuring less than 25mm², making them Intel's smallest and lowest power processors.¹ All this while delivering the power and performance you need for full Internet capabilities.+

    * Get a new range of performance-packed, power-efficient devices with excellent performance enabled by all new     hafnium-infused 45nm high-k silicon technology
    * Increase energy efficiency in smaller more compact designs with a thermal design power specification ranging from subwatt to 2.5 watts for mobile devices
    * Extend battery life in select devices with an incredibly low idle power as low as 30 mW allowing the device to stay powered on while also conserving energy

Based on an entirely new microarchitecture, the Intel Atom processor was developed specifically for performance and low power while maintaining full Intel® Core™ microarchitecture instruction set compatibility. Some future Intel Atom processors will also feature multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsiveness.

Just another generation of Intel Chip that is made to be more energy efficient by being smaller and using the element Hafnium in it's construction.

Honestly, it took me a while to get that one also.
For a while I thought they had a real atom powered pc or so, or a new technology to power them called "atom".
But I was pretty sure that such a technology might not end up in devises like the iPhone first (well there was that rumor at first, but it's now retracted) so I had to dig in a little more to find out it's actually a processor in development :duh:

Actually, all recent computers are way beyond the 'atom' level of elctronics. They actually use just parts of an 'atom' to do their work! Usually, anyway, I think there are people working on 'organic' memory devices. Of course, others have tried using light to transfer data. smile.gif

If the 'power' for a device uses 'atoms' it is usually called 'atomic'. Thinking.gif

This version of the chip was rumored to be the cpu comig in the next iPhone. Steve had a one-on-one chat with some heads rolling out of Intel and that rumor was squashed! smile.gif Others have said Apple might use it on the proverbial Apple 'tablet.'

Since the automobile makers used up all the non-words! tongue.gif Of course, I think Lexis took the track of Intel and Moto with their "Q" "x=number" trash. Yeah, those number name things are real catchy. Or their PR/Naming agents are simply unable to master any spoken language... rolleyes.gif
