Having Safari act like FF
« on: May 14, 2008, 10:21:09 PM »
I like FF, and I like Safari.

There are 2 reason Safari why isn't my default browser:

1. Adblock Plus. I'm wondering if such a thing exists for Safari? If so, point me to it, please. smile.gif

2. I like the ability to highlight a word or phrase, right click and select "Search in Google" and have my search move into a separate tab/window. If there's a pref to make this happen in Safari, please tell me how/where to find it.

Tanx!

Not sure about this: the thread Smalldog people.... Matt might shed some light on your question. (It was listed just below your thread!)

Sure about this: He loves you. (Not Matt....) wink.gif
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Kimmer, there is an adblock for Safari (I actually didn't know that until I looked!):

http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/

And there's this: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27897

Both of these are free - I think the first one allows white-listing, whereas the second may not.

And apparently PithHelmet also has an ad-blocking feature too, but it's shareware ($10)

And Safari has the same highlight a word and right click to search in Google function - if you want a new tab for that, just hold down the command key at the same time. Command + right click (on search in Google) gives you a new tab, Command + Shift opens a new tab and selects it, Command + Option + click opens a new window behind the current one and Command + Shift + click opens a new window and selects it. You do need to enable the "command + click" opens a new tab preference in Safari->Preferences->Tabs to get all this of course.

So...now I've learned two new things - and I'm off to install Safari Adblock! smile.gif

Thanks for asking Kimmer, I had already switched to Safari just now, growing tired of watching TS and another site do nothing but spin the cursor! wallbash.gif I fear that FF is getting too long in the tooth and bloated? I never seem to see the spinning pizza in Safari...

Of course, as soon as I start Safari, TS pops up in FF... rant.gif

A little later...

TS gave me nothing but "Cannot contact server..." errors just now. dntknw.gif It may have been a reaction to having downloaded Netscape 9.x minutes earlier! smile.gif

Aside: EarthLink/Mindspring notes that their 'forms' work best with either IE or NS. So, I downloaded the latest NS. But not without first having to navigate past messages that NS is no longer supported as of March 1, 2008. Kaput, fini, dead, as in the 'parrot!' rofl.gif But what do I know, Eathlink says it supports their forms. Sort of. It never did get to the second part of the form where one picks from a pop up list of problem types. So much for NS.

I'll call the nice lady in the PI before I install Exploder! nono.gif

EarthLink! Leading the way to the past! Hey, at least it's downhill! salute.gif tongue.gif

Thanks for both of those. Somehow I failed to find either. I was tired yesterday. Yeah, that's my reason and I'm stickin' with it. wink.gif

THANKS! Prefs fixed and while it's an extra step (FF only requires a right click), it's better than a poke in the eye with a stick.

Didn't see anything - it was about browser spoofing.

Thanks for asking Kimmer ...

You're welcome. Hope you get your whole browser/form/earthfink thing fixed.

Well, it sure seems faster than FF! But...

Is there a way...

1. To have Safari start with the last used tabs in place? (FF calls this 'the previous "Sessions"')

2. Get all links to open in a new tab, without adding the command key?

3. Have a tab open when the mouse is over it for a specified time?

Does PithHelmet add any of those functions? Nevermind, I'll go look at its web site...

BTW, SafariBlock allows both white and black listings. clap.gif
