Moving iTunes folder
« on: May 22, 2008, 05:24:15 PM »
I just noticed that my iTunes folder is consuming more than half the space of my boot drive.  I'm now copying the entire folder to my much larger second drive [I plan to clean-out the folder/figure-out why it's so big at some point in the future].

Does iTunes allow a seamless migration like this, or is there a different way to do this so that it is 'painless'?

TIA,

KB, I'm not running 10.5 (I'm at 10.4.11), but I am running iTunes 7.6.something which allows you to have more than one library and I would think that's similar to what you are hoping to do.

When you launch iTunes, hold down the OPTION key. A dialog box will come up and ask you about choosing a library. Your default should still remain your default (mine has at least), but now you can navigate to any iTunes library -- including one on another drive. smile.gif

Let us know how things work out.

Thnask, Kimmer!

I copied the bloated iTunes folder to the bigger drive, selected that location in Preferences > Advanced, and also selected the Library in the copied folder [using the Option key at iTunes startup].

All seemed to be well, so I first moved the old iTunes folder to the desktop, then to the Trash, and finally emptied the Trash to free lotsa space on my boot drive.

Still A-OK!

Glad it's working well. smile.gif

Nothing like space on the main drive to make one a happy camper.
