Email messages looping
« on: June 03, 2008, 12:23:35 PM »
I've set up Rules for giving an auto message that I'm out of town.
The messages just keep looping. So I shut it off.
Had 1000 emails in 2 hours!
Something is wrong and I don't know what it is.

Here's what I set up in my Mail Preferences:
Description - OUT OF TOWN
If ALL of the following conditions are met:
SENDER IS IN MY ADDRESS BOOK
Perform the following actions:
REPLY TO MESSAGE
REPLY MESSAGE TEXT... "out of town..."
Click OK.

After I've done that and go back, the damn rule has changed...
It now reads...
MOVE MESSAGE - REPLY MESSAGE TEXT...

When I want to change it back to REPLY TO MESSAGE, it is greyed out!
What gives?

Raven, where were the emails you received coming from? Can you include the email headers in your post, so perhaps we can figure out what is going on?

If you can find the FIRST time it did this, that would help. (hope you haven't trashed them all) I'm wondering if there was a bounce in there or something.

Yes, I did trash them. So testing this again before I leave tomorrow.

What I did notice is that when I change the text in my rules message and click OK,
another window comes up that asks:
"Do you want to apply your rules to messages in open mailboxes?"

What should the answer be? I'm not sure what this means.

PS. Paddy, finally I've got a new Internal HD and RAM chip, but it's still sitting in a bag cause I won't get to it until another week or so.
Then,  not sure how to install them. Will check your notes from previous post. Much thanks.

While I've not seen that particular message, probably because I don't usually have any other mailboxes open, I do see another message about 'applying the rule' to the Mailbox in use at the time. The answer is really up to you. There is no right/wrong.

In determining when to say "Apply Now" you need to think about where and what that rule will apply to. If that is the only message in the Mailbox or you are already in the that the rule might send it, there is not really any point in applying the rule.

OTOH, if you are still in the In Box or another 'common' box that could have several messages that the rule would affect, then go ahead and apply the rule and get all those messages to where ever you want the to go, even if that is the Trash.

Apparently, the app is 'smart' enough to understand where it is when you save a rule and the message wording is changed to fit the environment. smile.gif

In any event, always applying the rule should not hurt anything, it just might not actually do anything, either. salute.gif Other, longer-time users of Mail may bring other info and facts into this, I'm pretty much a noobie (except for getting my wife's iBook working the way it always used to before I upgraded her to leopard while she was away! eek2.gif ).

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
