Speakers for under $100 review....
« Reply #15 on: May 29, 2003, 12:01:22 PM »
Didn't some company recently announce a wireless gadget that streams music from a computer to a receiver?  I wish that I had saved the info but I didn't anticipate being in the market for one...

Another option is to use wireless speakers.  I have used Recoton speakers for years in various rooms and I have been pleased with the sound.  I think that the models I have are the cheapest (paid around $120/pair some years ago...) and the audio quality is akin to what you would get from a good boombox.  Recoton also has higher-priced speakers and models designed for use outside.

Once you have a speaker set with a transmitter you can save some bucks by purchasing speakers without a transmitter.

I have also tried wireless speakers from Radio Shack but the model I auditioned had crummy bass response and a tendency to "buzz" at anything but low volume levels.  They felt light and cheap, while the Recoton's are more substantial in both heft and bass response.

I appreciate excellent sound quality and the Recoton's do the job, as long as you don't expect high-end sound.  For that I rely on my Bose (connected to a 7300 in my office) and 20+ year old ESS speakers connected to an Outlaw receiver.

Mayo, B) speakers, I looked up Recoton and they look good.  As it is everything is basically set the way I like it already in my home, but it would be a great option.

One thing that I like about these computer speakers is the subwoofer that come with them, they make the speakers sound much more full than just stand alones.  I have a pair of old Fisher speakers w/ 15" woofers that help my surround sound for my TV (wall and window shaking).  These computer subs can help reach some of those low frequencies that a regular speaker can't (not as low as my Fishers, but still nice and deep).

Al, as far as I know Recoton doesn't make a subwoofer.  But the wireless speakers sure fill a need and aren't very expensive, which is nice.

My Bose setup has a subwoofer; those tiny Bose speakers don't produce any bass at all.  It has a nice, full sound, which it should since the set was originally priced at $700  jawdrop.gif  I lucked-out and bought them when Bose dropped the price and I paid $379, which is still a lot for computer speakers.  But the sound beats just about anything I have heard, although I know of other comparably-priced speakers that have garnered reviews similar to the Bose.

My old ESS speakers already have ample bass, so when I add surround speakers I am going to wait and see how the ESS speakers handle the lower-end before I get a subwoofer; I may not need that extra bottom-end.
