What's in a name?
« on: July 27, 2008, 10:12:42 AM »
Some parents in New Zealand decided 9 or so years ago to name their daughter "Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii" and they've now been overruled and have had their child taken away!  This is from a blog at USA Today:

QUOTE
The government tells various news organizations that parents were blocked from giving these names to their children: Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Stallion, Twisty Poi, Keenan Got Lucky, Sex Fruit, Fat Boy, Satan, Adolf Hitler and 4Real.

What's the weirdest name you've come across?

From the baby announcements in our local paper dated July 26, 2008:

"Maximilian Sebastian (last name withheld by me) was welcomed home by his sister, Lothorien."

EDIT to add:

My wife had a distant relative named Montana Louisiana. They called her Monty Lou.

I really liked the name America Burroughs & Burrows that I saw in the Old Protestant Burying Ground in Rockville, MD (F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife were originally buried there because they were out of sorts with the Catholic Church).  This was I learned later a pretty popular name during the 1880's - 1910 period.

It would seem from that story there was no official objection to naming twins Benson and Hedges, a well-known UK brand of cigarette... generally regarded a few years ago as upmarket rolleyes.gif

And do you reckon No 16 Bus Shelter's parents were following the fashion for naming the child after where it was conceived?

We once had Col. Nickoll's daughter, Penny, baby sit our youngster... We though they should have another girl and let them become a touring show. "Penny Nicholl's & Dines!" Might be a good name for a 'savings bank!' smile.gif
