Safari Bookmarks Bar vs. Bookmarks Menu
« on: May 11, 2003, 06:02:17 AM »
I was just wondering why there is a Bookmarks Bar & a Bookmarks Menu in Safari. Is there something I'm missing? Is there some feature gained by the separation I'm unaware of?

I put all my bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar, all my folders. That way they're accessible from drop down menus in my...Bookmarks Bar. This is my #1 favorite feature about Safari, and along with #2 (the visual display of tabs in tabbed browsing) as well as- of course- the SPEED, this is the reason I've stuck to Safari and not ditched it for OmniWeb, iCab, or Camino.

It's just, to me, the Bookmarks Menu seems superfluous.

Does anyone use this? Does anyone find the separation indispensable? Can someone explain the benefits of having both to me?

You know...  I have never even thought of putting folders in the bookmarks bar.  doh.gif

I'm sure there are benefits of both the bar and menu...  I think it's pretty much just a matter of preference though.  smile.gif

I guess it depends on whether you want direct links in your bookmarks bar, or folders (which in effect, are drop down menus). This capability isn't new - I've had a combination of stuff in IE's bookmark bar for years. Generally, I keep stuff in the bookmarks bar that I go to all the time - daily, in many cases, and they're mostly direct links. I have an Apple folder, with access to different parts of Apple's site in the folder and a folder for my own web sites, and left the default Safari "News" folder.

Flexibility - ya gotta like it!  smile.gif

And, when a folder is placed in the bookmarks bar, all links within that folder may be opened simultaneously (as a tab) by clicking on the "Open in Tabs" at the bottom of the folder. tongue.gif

Don't know why there would be confusion? smile.gif

Menu shows all the Bookmarks at once.

For me that's 347,204 in one gazillion Folders.

I wouldn't care to put all them in the Bar.

Also that's the way to organize, move them around.

Never show Toolbar Favorites in IE except to add Bookmarks.

I don't like the space lost if I leave it.

The Safari Bookmarks Bar takes up less space.

Speaking of which.

It just kills me how much space MSN takes up.

Just leaves you a portion of the screen.

How can people put up with that? huh.gif

I should mention, I downloaded a program called Safari Menu.

This program works like the Bookmark Menu, but better, because it includes all the folders in the left pane below the Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu in that all-at-once drop drown menu.
