Oh my, what a day!

Spent the day finding and loading a trailer....

Our graduate school student son went to do his apartment condition report the other day. He began sneezing violently. Long story short: he got that lease voided, and found a new apartment in the space of two days. He has to be out of his present sub-leased apartment by next Thursday.

Short story long: Apt. #1 was furnished, Apt. #2 is not. Enter Mom & Dad, who were planning to take a few boxes and small furnishings to him tomorrow. It was 7PM last night (Thursday) when we finally had enough information to decide that we needed to take his big furniture as well.

Do you know how hard it is to walk into a Rental store and get a trailer on the spot for the weekend at the end of August? It's darn near impossible! U-Haul happens to be the only national company that rents one-way trailers here. None could be found within 200 miles. I don't know if they looked for one beyond that distance. After many phone calls, trying to reserve a trailer online, many more phone calls, looking for small trucks or vans to rent, exasperation, resignation, and much stress, we finally located a local company with a trailer available that we have to bring back.

It's now loaded and ready to go. Moral to the story: before you buy a house, go there and take 1,100 deep breaths!

Ah, relaxing and listening to the ball game while online. Just what I needed!

So, what direction do you go to 'unload'

SO GLAD, ours are 'past that stage'.... but miss them and doing it just the same...

All 'their stuff' is still in 'our' house.... and not sure when they will, if ever, get it out!?!?!?

We know how hard it is to find a one way trailer any time of the year (we had to reserve the one for our October move in August - and even then we had to drive 45 miles to pick it up!) ... anyhow ... you have our sympathies for all you've been through.

Get some sleep and have a safe trip to and from.

I'm glad that I don't have that sort of drama this weekend; not expecting too much trouble moving the younger son into the scholarship hall.  His brother and his brothers
room mates are moving him in and I'm only there for moral support.  My drama for the week was the annual "first week of school" at work!  Teachers behave like children
sometimes!

Headed south, to Champaign-Urbana. Our Minneapolis trips are a thing of the past. Much of his "stuff" came from my parents' house.

We'll have my sister and her husband, bring up a truck load of our sons stuff we left at their house. Turned out to be a good thing! It would never all fit in our van and trailer. Our son might have a couple of friends help us unload.
My wife is "looking forward" to that first week of school. In her case, the biggest "baby" is the principal, but some of the teachers can be as bad as the kids.

Only two weeks to kickoff of the first game of 2008. Can't wait.

This is just practice for many more moves. We sent 3 kids to college. Then when they graduate you have to move them, and in the case of my daughter, she changed colleges after one year.

Then after graduation and getting a job, you'll probably have to move them several more times. Then they will get married, which may necessitate another move. Then they will buy a house/condo, etc and another move. Finally, they will accumulate enough stuff that the move requires a large truck.

Be careful unloading, I assume you made it through the loading part! I've an appointment with a doc tomorrow to see about my back (the pain, not the yellow stripe!). The Grand Kids wanted me to bring an unused TV from their house back to ours and replace one of our very old crackling, snapping, popping ones that they watch upstairs. Turned out to be a 27" flat front CRT model. Do you know how thick that front glass is? Almost 2.5 inches near the edges! That's where the weight comes from. That's also why they are so hard on ones back, especially when lifted from the floor! The back is getting better. I think. Either that or the nerves are just dying off slowly! Definitely not rolling in the floor laughing!

As for as moving children goes, once they graduate, their on their own! That's one of the minor reasons hey went to college, anyway. They should be able to get a job that will pay them enough to move what little they have!

Yes, it will be nice to have a better excuse to go back there more often. We will try to get to the Homecoming game, vs. Minnesota! The back is fine. And we're home again.

Actually, when we were having trouble finding a trailer, our son was calling friends from Milwaukee to ask if they knew anyone who had a trailer we could borrow. Unfortunately, your lorry is too far away to borrow on short notice.

He had two other strong young men there to help unload. Loading was indeed the more difficult stage.

Well, they're almost on their own when they graduate. He is saving his money instead of buying and maintaining a car. Smart move, I think. But, either way, he needed our help moving. He wouldn't have bought a van or truck.

I added up the cost of the two-day adventure, and was astounded at the total! Even the cost of delivered pizza is way up these days.
