I recently tried a Terminal Command to update prebindings, but was given the "password" entry with a black block, but nothing I typed in was evident. is there a trick to entering a password? I typed in the command and hit "Enter." Was that right?

Two things...
Update_prebinding is no longer necessary in 10.2.x
All you will see is
password:
keystrokes are not echoed. You did correctly by typing the pswd and hitting enter.
