Please tell me again, where does OE store my mail?
« on: May 12, 2003, 10:30:51 AM »
I recall asking this same question many months ago, shortly after I'd switched over to Outlook Express 5.06 as my email client (OS 9.1), and I think it was Paddy who informed me, but:

- I can't remember what she reported
- I've looked into all the likely-looking MS folders on my Mac
- I can't find this info by searching this board
- I can't find this info by searching OE Help
- I can't find this info by searching MS's OE website

TIA,

 - kbeartx

kBear, using os9.2 MSExplorer 5.1, my mail follows this path
Internet Explorer 5.1
Outlook Express 5.02 Folder
Identity
OE User(s)
from there it goes to whatever “User(s) file” I’m into at the time.
Me
Me2
Me3
Me4
Sandbox

Now let’s just say I’m in Identity User(s) Sandbox

SANDBOX Revealed (clicking “Name” in the control bar on top of the folder)
Newsgroup Cache
Cache
Contacts
Database
Database Cache
Internet Mail
Internet News
Mailing Lists
OE Rules
OE Signatures
Outlook Express Prefs
Preferences
Rules
Schedules
Signatures
Messages*******

The email in my folder is in “Messages” file, click on it, goto> get info and see the volume, that will tell you where the storage is.

SANDBOX  time line revealed (clicking “Date Modified” control bar on top of the folder)

Database Cache

Schedules

Outlook Express Prefs
Internet News
OE Signatures
Contacts
OE Rules
Internet Mail

When you add to your mail, (incoming or outgoing) the Messages, DataBase,  Cache, Pref, and Schedules change, that demonstrates where the activity is and shows you where the eMail is going, how and when.

Presently My “Message” has 83.4 MB of data
the “DataBase” has 16.5 MB
Cache is 16k
If you open OE with the Option Key you can compress your mail. In the User(s) file  that’s open.
That will effect the Cache and DataBase and Message files.
Making new files and leaving 3 “OLD” files to be trashed.

When I back-up daily I isolate the User(s) file only, doing just messages for some reason doesn’t work as well without the DatBase file, it;s been years since I've changed anything though, I may be forgetting something?
