What the world needs now is cancer-fighting beer!
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:36:23 AM »
Researchers at University of Wisconsin (where else) and Rice University have been working on different ways to get "Resveratrol" into our bodies to help extend our lives and fight cancer.  They're trying to do it with beer:

QUOTE
Stevenson said that the Rice research group, most of the members of which aren't old enough to legally drink alcoholic beverages, came up with the idea of adding resveratrol to beer during a casual conversation about potential projects to undertake. "The idea is that it may have greater effects [in beer than in wine]," he added. "The amount of red wine you'd need to drink to get the same results they get with rats in labs is about half a bottle a day."

He explained that the amount of resveratrol in wine varies from bottle to bottle, since it depends on growing conditions for the grapes and other variables. The researchers felt they could design a beer with higher and more consistent concentrations of the cancer-fighting chemical.

Just think of how much better they'd do if they were using Macbook Pro's:
QUOTE
The students, using their own Dell, Lenovo ThinkPad and Gateway laptops, are now in the process of developing a genetically modified strain of yeast that will ferment beer and produce resveratrol at the same time. Stevenson said that as the research advances, the team will need to use one of Rice University's computer grids to run compute-heavy genetic models.

The newspaper here has been running a series on alcohol consumption in our drunken state. We have some of the worst binge drinking and DWI statistics in the nation. They didn't come out and say it in the Sunday paper (the only day I get one), but it's an obsession with some. (I can't use the R word)

It's probably the long winters; I'd drink too much if I lived up there year round!

Don't ever move to Wisconsin then. There are lots of people who drink too much here; even in the summer.

I'll have a glass of wine once in a blue moon, but I've never tasted a beer that I had to have more of.

Where did you hear that there's no beer in heaven?? wink.gif

This is a well known fact; there's even a song about it!

QUOTE
In heaven there is no beer
(no beer?!)
That's why we drink it here
And when we're all gone from here
Our friends will be drinking all the beer.

In heaven there is no wine
(no wine?!)
So we drink till we feel fine
And when we leave this all behind
Our friends will be drinking all the wine.

What the United Kingdom needs now is a partial pint. Yep, there are plans afoot to downsize the British pint. In an AP story in out paper today, the sad news is revealed; 1/3 less ale in the glass. I wonder what they'll call it. I'd vote for "The Pint from Hell" (.666) wink.gif

Didn't we fight a War of Independence over stuff like that?  I'm sure I heard that U.S. pubs were downsizing as well!

Good thing there's no tube he can reach with his lips. Otherwise, he might fall off of hissaddle after awhile, hic!
